Solo Rule Clarification: SP Related

In my search to find a way to swap out the 1.8 in an L and not be in SM I found this possible loop hole in SP...

15.1-C
Quote:

Equipment and/or specifications may be exchanged between different years and models of a vehicle if (a) the item is standard on the year/model from which it was taken, and (b) the years/models are listed on the same line of Appendix A (Street Prepared Classes). The updated/backdated part or the part to which it is to be attached may not be altered, modified, machined or otherwise changed to facilitate the updating/backdating allowance. Standard factory installation methods, locations, and configurations are allowed. The updating and/or backdating of engines, transmissions or transaxles must be done as a unit; component parts of these units may not be interchanged. Cars not listed in the Street Prepared sections of Appendix A may not be updated/backdated until approved by the SEB and published in the official SCCA publication.

Subaru

4WD Turbo (all NOC)
Forester (non-turbo)
Impreza NOC
Legacy & Legacy GT
So, what does NOC mean exactly?

Am I correct in thinking that I could swap a motor from a "4WD Turbo" or LGT in to an "Impreza NOC" legally?

Also, where are the updating/backdating rules? I've looked through the '08 Solo rule book as well as the GCR and I didn't find it.

NO

That is the update/backdate rule... You can change parts between cars that are within the same line.

NOC = Not Otherwise Classified or anything that meets this description that isn't already classified elsewhere.

So in this case, anything in a Legacy or LGT can be swapped into the same. The WRX and STI are defined elsewhere in SP, so Impreza NOC means any 2.5s pretty much.

In this case, "4WD Turbo (all NOC)" is going to mean the older turbos like the XT.

Often there are year ranges as well, so you can only swap within the years specified.

The car and swap in question is a 94 Impreza L with a later Legacy GT engine, just to specify.

By "same line" you mean Legacy, Impreza, etc. correct? I figured that would be an issue but in the first sentence of 15.1-C it says, "Equipment and/or specifications may be exchanged between different years and models of a vehicle..." and I was unsure if by "model" for Subaru's sake if it meant the sub models of the Impreza such as the L and Brighton or Legacy and Outback.

Also, the Turboed Legacy GTs are classified in a different class (as Legacy GT '05+) so update/backdate would only work on the 2nd and 3rd generations Legacy GT.

It does mean sub-model and in the case of NOC can mean multiple models, but an Impreza <> Legacy. Different platform, different line = no swaps. Your only chance would be if magically the factory part numbers for EVERY engine related component of the car the engine came out of matched an engine available for an Impreza. And you would have to have the documentation to prove it. Not bloody likely.

Yeah Nick, I saw that after I posted the first time. Even the RS (or so I'm assuming because GS lists an "Impreza 2.5 N/A") is off limits then.

Thanks for the clarification Dean.

Tim, you can use parts from a 1993-2001 Impreza with 1.8 or 2.2 liter engine at will. The RS, Legacy, Forester etc. are all off-limits in SP. My red car is a conglomerate of 3 or 4 various Impreza NOC cars. Started as 1.8 AWD '93 wagon, now has 2001 EJ22 and soon 2001 gearbox and 2000 rear diff. Wiring is all 2000/2001, etc. As long as it's an Impreza without a 2.5 RS you can take whatever you want from it, you just can't crack open engines or transmissions. The RS is off limits because it is classed in DSP as Impreza 2.5 RS. It has nothing to do with what is classed where in Stock classes.

Libila 2008-01-28 10:43 AM

Kevin, I just saw the "Impreza 2.5" in the stock class first ;)

LSDs are open in SP, right? The later rear VLSD coupled with an OBX or Cusco front LSD would do wonders for getting the power to the ground don't you think?

Kevin M 2008-01-28 10:50 AM

Yes, differentials are allowed in SP, and pretty much required to compete on a high level. An OBX frotn and some form of mechanical rear are in the eventual plans for my car. The other thing you can do is just set your suspension up properly so you don't lift the inside tires. ;)

Libila 2008-01-28 01:26 PM

Are you planning on running really small and wide rims, like 13x8?

Kevin M 2008-01-28 01:30 PM

Nah, it wouldn't be worth the hassle. If I were going to run R compounds I would probably go with one of the new 15" sizes. 275/50R15 or something like that.

Libila 2008-01-29 04:24 AM

So you're just going to run a 225 street compound and liveable spring rates?

Kevin M 2008-01-29 08:51 AM

235/40R17 actually. And not going crazy with coilovers, it's still my daily driver. Ultimately I would like some RCE T2s, but will have to make do with the budget stuff for a while. When I get around to building a true project track/autox car, it will have beefy rates and actual wide tires for autocross.
