painting the wheels
 

so im going to paint the wheels this weekend and i have a couple questions. what sandpaper should i use, and how much should i get? How much paint, primer and clear coat should i buy?

Just buy more paint then you need and then return what you don't use.

i used 220 grit, 3 cans flat black, 1 can of clear coat, and some red vinyl pin striping stuff on my srt. I would reccomend that you use about 1 can of paint on each wheel. It tends to chip pretty easily with the few coats i used.

oh yeah, and use masking tape on the tires to get a clean job.

When I did mine on my 240sx they lasted a good long time without chipping, but mine never looked glossy like I wanted them too. I did about 3-4 coats on each wheel and 2 coats of clear. I also didn't sand them down.

I am currently painting my stock wheels. I had the tires removed so they were easier to work with, don't know if you are keeping them on. Anyways, I bought four cans of duplicolor wheel coating, a pack each of 180, 220, & 320 grit sand paper. (I'm not sure if I will apply clearcoat since I'm going for the satin black look. Worried it will make it too glossy. I will post pics prob sat or sun.) I've got two prepped, hopefully get the other two done tomorrow after work. Three things that have always worked for me when using the rattle can approach:

1: Good prep work. This means sanding, lots of sanding. CLEAN THEM WELL! (I'm at about 2.5 hrs per 17" wheel:eek: ) This also means prepping your environment, clean the floors, check the temp and if possible the humidity. Get whatever you're spraying up off the floor, I'm using some wire tied around my rafters.

2: Light even coats applied usually within an hour of each-other (VERY IMPORTANT!). Some paints require you to wait upwards of a week to re-coat or face something you are really unhappy with and may have to do all over again.

3: Dry time! In my experience anything shake and spray style takes ATLEAST three days to fully harden. Yeah it feels dry in a couple hours but, its still soft.

P.S.- If you sand right, you won't need primer. There is plenty of really good primer under that stock paint, you just need to get rid of all that shiny stuff on top to get your new paint to stick.
