Longboard Races, Plumas Ski Club 1/18/09, lots of pics & carnage video

Annual longboard event in Graeagle, site of the 'World's First Ski Race' in the 1800's. Everyone gets good and snockered, dresses up in old-style clothes and hucks downhill on 16'+ skis that they make every year for the event. Kind of like a pinewood derby, but more painful and more drinking.

This video has action that starts about halfway through, the glare goes away when they start. That's a few of my friends with one old timer in there. Fast and scary.

This is a second group run, Dille losing it on the far end, and Jack and Scotty killing it.

Great day, tons of people, lots of great getups, a good bluegrass band, plenty of drinking (for us). Not too many clampers, but you will see a few in the pictures. Here's some photos, more at: http://s113.photobucket.com/albums/n...%20Races%2009/

Um... do you have to file a route plan and phone ahead for help when you want to turn?

Dean 2009-01-20 10:38 AM

Turn, why would you turn? This is the drag race of skiing. Turning is not required and to stop, you just crash, I mean deliberately place your body on the snow. :)

They use those stickpole thingys to lean back on like a rudder or brake. Mostly crash and burn though, but I did see an impressive turn or two. I think there's one in the second video (?)
