African Stig is black. Black Stig just wears the black suit (though he could be black under the suit too for all we know).

MattR 2009-02-05 04:46 PM

Yes. I get it.

Dean 2009-02-05 04:52 PM

I don't understand why this is such a big deal. It has to be next to impossible to keep who Stig is secret if anybody really wanted to find out. Tell the paparazzi we need a pic and offer $1000 for it and it is done...

I understand why they try and make it a generic or anonymous driver so the focus stays on the the cars and the hosts  but get over it...

It is not like he has gone out and is promoting the new "Stig" cologne or posed in just his helmet and gloves in Playgirl...

Nick Koan 2009-02-05 05:05 PM

They are also saying that there are really 5 Stigs anyway.

sybir 2009-02-05 05:09 PM

black, white, african, american, and.....trucker stig?

WRX06TR 2009-02-05 05:19 PM

The real question is who was listening to the self-help tapes.

As I understood it, the original reason for the secrecy is that it enabled the show to bring in top-notch drivers who have clauses in their contracts that disallow them from non-team appearances.

That is crap. (Not that it is you who is at fault for the crap...) Most drivers can drive almost anything as long as they aren't driving for their main sponsor that day. Occasionally they need permission, but that is seldom an issue. Look at all the car/team hoping weirdness that happens in Nascar, ALMS, Speed/SCCA series, etc... The exception might be a Coke driver driving a Pepsi car, but that is not the case.

I know that direct-sponsored F1 drivers are not permitted to so much as be photographed in a car other than the marque they drive, and it's certainly reasonable for top-level teams not to permit multi-million dollar (or Euro, or whatever) investment be risked by said investments proclivities for high speed driving. Kind of like how NBA and NFL players are forbidden to own motorcycles or in some cases, not even allowed to play pick-up basketball. I agree with your comment about "most drivers" but part of the mystique of The Stig is that he could be literally anyone- up to the rumors it's been some current F1 drivers, even rumblings it was Lewis Hamilton at times. You can see where McLaren might not like someone like him running around in crazy fast street cars without true safety equipment, right?

Kevin M 2009-02-05 10:44 PM

It's also possible that Michael Schumacher is the only driver ever to have that level of restriction, because that's the only one I can recall hearing directly about it.

Dean 2009-02-05 11:13 PM

Except maybe older S2000s, I don't think F1 drivers would know how to drive a street car. ;)

100_Percent_Juice 2009-02-05 11:33 PM

I'm the Stig. Why do you think I never show up to meets?

I saw everybody saying that on NASIOC too. But it was in the first episode of the newest season. It was supposed to be in the episode when they go to vietnam. Jeremy says, "oh look, its the stig's communist cousin!"
