Moonroof

Well, I hope you guys aren't getting tired of me yet lol. I've always wanted a moonroof in my car, and there's one for sale on rs25 that is the same color as my car. I was just wondering if you guys could suggest a shop to get it installed at? If I decide to get it. Thanks!

Wait, you want to install a factory moonroof, from a different year and body style of car, just because the paint matches? That is a horrible, horrible idea. Save your money and get an aftermarket one that's designed to be installed in a car without a sunroof- trying to modify something else will end in tears.

Really? I'm glad I asked then. Why is it a bad idea tho?

There's a big difference between the OEM hole in the roof that the factory panel installs in when compared to the hole in the roof a sawsall creates. Namely, there's a nice gasketed and self draining lip from the factory. An aftermarket kit is designed to install in a roof that's had a plain old hole cut into it.

Keep in mind how expensive a sun/moonroof is going to be when you factor in the cutting, fitting, finishing and painting labor on top of the cost of the kit itself. Personally, I'd rather spend $1000 on something other than a hole in the roof.

Maybe I'm missing something (probably) but I figured the shop that installed it could gasket the oem one jus as well as an aftermarket one..? And the color matching was so I didn't have to get it painted :) I wanted to ask a shop how much it would cost to get it done, on the off chance it wouldn't be a rediculous price. Maybe it's just a bad idea tho?

No body shop is going to be able to modify a flat roof to have the proper OEM style lip in it unless you're replacing the whole roof panel with one that's already got a sunroof.

Not to mention after a while the seals will inevitably end up in leaking. That's one of the reasons that I'm no longer allowed to get vehicles with holes in the roof. Both the 91' Legacy and the 93' Landcruiser leak.

Oh ok. Thanks guys. Guess that's more money for tires and suspension :)

Yeah, that whole 1st Gen Legacy line got a bad design. Interestingly enough, my 2nd Gen 1995 does not leak at all!
