Recommend for short shifter
Hi, I'm new to this site. Just bought a 1998 Outback. Would like opinions from those much more knowledgable than I on getting the best short shifter and hard bushings. Thanks, Dennis

I'd start with just bushings and see if that works for you. I personally have a stock shifter with Turn In Concepts bushings front and rear, and it's super solid. I suspect those bushings (for older 5MT cars) would work for you too.

Would bushings make his shifts shorter?

Obviously not. I am recommending he try doing just bushings before spending $100+ on a shifter he may decide he doesn't actually want or need.

+1 for TIC /kartboy bushings. It is a mix of the two if you want to do them all at least on a WRX/STI. Otherwise, I'd go with the cheapest one you can find pretty much. There is nothing magical about short shifters IMHO to justify the uber brand name.

Thanks for your responses. I'll continue my research but have to do something about the mushy shifter. Dennis

If it's mushiness that's the problem, then I'm 99% sure that just replacing bushings will do what you're looking for. Contact the guys at TIC and see if they have bushings that fit for you. I'm pretty sure they do. You really just need the front and rear bushings for now. I'd skip the little ones that actually go on the shifter for now.
