LUK CLUTCH?

So my tranny just got looked at and due to improper installation my clutch is completely destroyed. Thank God pressure plate and bearings and stuff are ok. My question is the shop said the only brand they themselves supply is Luk and after doing research I learned all Nissan's cars use that brand pretty much. Everyone I know with a Nissan including Z cars doesn't have to replace for 100k plus miles. Point is how does Luk stack up to Exedy? Any help would be appreciated. I know both these brands are basic OEM clutches. Guy at shop is going to call me back with a quote in 20 mins. The only other alternative is to order an entirely new clutch kit.

Clippersfan86 2010-03-02 02:12 PM

Well I got an update. Clutch teeth where alignment tool goes is completely smashed and unusable. ; (. Nobody sells clutches alone.. only entire kits...

cody 2010-03-02 02:36 PM

Ouch Dude. That really sucks. I'd stick with Exedy or one of the other commonly trusted brands, personally. Maybe call the vendor that sold you the first one and tell them your story. If they have a heart, they'll sell you a new one at cost.

100_Percent_Juice 2010-03-02 02:43 PM

IIRC you can buy a new Exedy Disc on ebay.

100_Percent_Juice 2010-03-02 02:46 PM

I just checked and there are quite a few from a single vendor. I don't know which disc you need but I am sure its there. There are several 2.0 and 2.5l discs to choose from.

Exedy Clutch Disc - Ebay

Clippersfan86 2010-03-03 08:16 AM

Thanks Juice! The first recommended buyer is going to get my money.

100_Percent_Juice 2010-03-03 08:38 AM

I would get on the Exedy website to get the right part number for your car. How did your clutch get screwed up anyways?

Clippersfan86 2010-03-03 09:28 AM

Because it wasn't all the way against the housing the mechanic said. Juice the only brand new ones i'm finding for my specific year and the non sti wrx is the ACT 6 puck heavy duty's and stuff. I hear 6 pucks are a bitch to drive but way more durable? Anyone have experience with 6 pucks?

Btw Juice the fucked up thing is for 06-07 and up Exedy doesn't release clutches by themselves to vendors, only complete kits. The vendor said if I had an 05 he would be able to get it for me.... ; (.

I would also like to know if an STI clutch will fit on an WRX. They look identical but I don't want to mess up. Anyone know if I can buy an STI clutch?

A few of us are running the 6 puck on the street. It's not terrible, but you do have to make sure it's properly bedded, or you'll be bucking all over the place.

I've actually got the 4-puck and the race flywheel on my WRX, and it's a pain on the street, but not impossible to drive.

Clippersfan86 2010-03-03 09:42 AM

Scott how about STI oem clutches fitting in WRX ones. Exedy only offers and STI clutch for my year.

cody 2010-03-03 09:46 AM

If it specifically states STI and not WRX, it's safe to assume they're different. What about a brand other than Exedy? Can you get just the disk from ACT or similar? Shit, they probably have something at NAPA or Kragen you could use that wouldn't break the bank. Just guessing though.

I kinda doubt that there is anything unique or proprietary about the Exedy disc that would prevent you from using a different brand in this situation. But hopefully Cory or somebody can say for sure.

Shit, if the mechanic says the LUK disck will cure your woes, and they'll warranty it, just go that route.

sperry 2010-03-03 09:54 AM

I don't know a ton about clutches. I do know that the Exedy Hypersingle I had at one point only worked with the matching flywheel, because it was a single puck on a smaller diameter flywheel. After I killed that and was unable to replace it in pieces, I decided to go with the ACT stuff because of its OEM compatibility.

However, I've got an '04 6MT in my WRX, so I've only needed the STi specific bits and I'm not sure what crossover compatibility there is between the STi and WRX for clutches, but I'd be willing to guess they're interchangeable, simply because I can't see why they wouldn't be. But that doesn't make it true... hopefully someone w/ more knowledge can chime in.

MPREZIV 2010-03-03 12:05 PM

I know for a fact that STi and WRX flywheel and pressure plate are different, but I'm not 100% sure on the actual disc itself.

To the point of this thread, go with the LUK. It's just fine.

Clippersfan86 2010-03-03 12:16 PM

Ok the guys at ACT said the splines are the same but the actual diameter of the PP and the Disc itself are different for WRX to STI. I just ordered an ACT Performance clutch! It's their best organic street clutch and I got it for only $185 shipped with 2nd day shipping from a vendor! Now i'm really happy! They said they are 98 percent sure it will fit Exedy's OEM Pressure Plate. YAY. They said it's made with Copper rather than Fiberglass too so it's a big improvement over OEM.

MPREZIV 2010-03-03 12:32 PM

And it's being installed by a professional, right?

100_Percent_Juice 2010-03-03 05:09 PM

I wouldn't trust someone who is only 98 percent sure.

Clippersfan86 2010-03-03 05:24 PM

Yea it's being installed by Nevada Transmission Exchange. They offered me the best price and the owner has been really damn cool to me. Lol Joel... I'm pretty sure that they wouldn't change the size of a clutch that's meant to replace OEM, and if they did I assume they would sell as a complete kit only. Lets hope for the best though!

03wrxwagon 2010-03-04 02:30 PM

so your install crew did not do a complete job am i correct of going through everything?

Clippersfan86 2010-03-06 08:17 AM

Correct ; \. Now tranny is up successfully but somehow in the process we lost my Axle clip for front drivers side. Subaru Lithia doesn't have in stock and nobody else makes yet because they say it's way too soon for little pieces from an 06 model to be missing/broken so it was most likely caused by fault install. So i'm driving all around town and calling 50 places trying to find an Axle seal and clip. My Axle pops out right away when you put it in.

Clippersfan86 2010-03-06 10:28 AM

Picking my car up in an hour. Found an Axle clip and seal at Carson Subaru. ; ). A very expensive, long and stressful 3 weeks without my car.
