California DMV - what a wonderful institution

So I get my old 1991 C4 smogged today. Barely passes and I also get the Spanish Inquisition on my K&N filter. After much discussion they pass the thing. So I go to AAA to renew my registration. Keep in mind I have owned the car outright with title in hand for 10 years now, registering every year with California and smogging it every other year. Well I'm told that I need to surrender the title because my car was just registered in South Carolina and they need the title. I look confused and point to my car in the parking lot which clearly displays the correct plate number, and say you mean the title for that car over there? Really, the car is currently registered with tags that don't expire until the 22nd of this month, I have the title in my hand and the car is 50 feet away. The lady just looks at me and said, "well there is nothing I can do - maybe you should call the South Carolina DMV".

What a cluster!

Why would you want to report your own car as stolen in a state that shouldn't even have the car registered?

Call SC DVM and tell them someone there mistyped a VIN number and it's causing you havoc as the owner of the car with that VIN.

I called SC DMV. They said this has happened several times since they changed their systems. For some reason, thousands of California VINs have been crossed referenced from CA to SC? WTF! Hopefully this will all be resolved next week, just in time for CA DMV to charge me a late fee on my registration.
