If anyone wonders why baseball is/was "America's Pastime", it was the early 1950's rivalries between the Giants, Dodgers, and Yankees. New York was the center of the world, and Baseball was the center of New York.

Pastime comes from the Middle English 'Passe Tyme', which is an activity that will help pass the time.

That it is... though the meaning is basically the same. Unlike "passe thyme" which is just a spice that's old news.
