http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5081/...9231ce2058.jpg Just finished taking the transmission out of an Evo..... this is the most damaged clutch disk ive ever seen.... there were springs and chunks of the TOB everywhere |
What brand was it? It looks like there is still pad material before the rivets and they don't look too glazed.
Was it installed correctly? Anything wrong with the pressure plate or FW? TOB and disc springs should never be anywhere near each other.:?::~::huh: WTH happened? |
I wonder if someone launched super hard, and the springs flexed into the TOB. The rest of the damage was just from the shrapnel spinning around in the bell housing?
...'course that would indicate that probably wasn't the correct disk for the clutch or something. |
The TOB is outside the pressure plate on an Evo like most cars, right? I don't know how parts from it or the springs could mingle through the tiny gaps in the PP spring levers.
|
The clutch disk had two types of springs, small ones and large ones. The small ones were wedged inside the pressure plate spring assembly and all over the place. The TOB attachment pieces were scattered about the bell housing. No major chunks of the bell housing were damaged, luckily. Surprisingly, the face of the flywheel looks fine.

Probably just a super cheap eBay "race" clutch that asploded all on its own.

I couldn't identify the brand - the pressure plate was blue, no markings. I believe it was installed correctly. Pressure plate and flywheel looked good - smooth and no discoloring due to excessive heat. The springs were loose in the bell housing. They had all come loose when the clutch disk broke and were just rattling around the rotating assembly. I told they guy that he is very lucky he didn't damage the bell housing or anything else. I think that he was launching the car when this happened. He had just bought it and was unfamiliar with it - claims that he 'missed a shift into second' and was driving 'aggressively'. |
