Yeah, that sounds more mechanical than hydraulic. Start checking for play in the linkage & mounts. Jack up the front end and have someone steer lock to lock while you look for things shifting, etc.

Seriously. From what I've read though those guys aren't dedicated game developers, they do mostly contract simulation work for pro customers and rFactor is kind of their side project for the masses.
