[craggy old man mode]Look here sonny.... In the olden days movies were 1.33:1(4:3) and when TV was invented, it matched that aspect ration.
In the 1950s, movies went "wide screen" and TV took 50+ years to catch up, largely due to consumers not caring and lack of a standard means to transfer larger images...
Most still imagery is still 4:3 by the way.
And widescreen sucks for doing any work that will end up being printed!
