Consider getting a taser.
You can totally get away with tasering someone robbing your car or such, and since it incapacitates the victim you have time to photograph them and call the police. (Perhaps kick them in the head a few times for fun as well)
A baseball bat you can be arrested for aggravated assault or something, and well, anything worse than that you wouldn't beat a murder charge with a self-defense plea.
