Basic physics... Just like bolts stretch so do rods, and other parts deflect and tolerances are taken up as oil films are squeezed even if by thousandths of an inch. Also, the final hone on cylinders is much finer than the rough hone of the past. Rings must be pushed into this hone before it gets knocked down to much.

There are plenty of references out there for modern engines that say the classic slow break in is dead. Run it at mixed RPMs at mixed power levels early is what I read from people in the know today.
