I just replaced a wheel bearing in my sister's Legacy.
It was making a loud noise at highway speeds at first (sounded like bad tires), then a month later it started making a louder noise during high-speed turning, then later the same noise at low speed turning, at which point it was brought to my attention. Clearly not a bad CV.
There was no play in the hub, but when I got the knuckle off you could "feel" a rough spot turning the hub by hand. A new bearing and inner seal from NAPA and $30 pressing fee at the local driveline shop, and she was back in business.
