I know that direct-sponsored F1 drivers are not permitted to so much as be photographed in a car other than the marque they drive, and it's certainly reasonable for top-level teams not to permit multi-million dollar (or Euro, or whatever) investment be risked by said investments proclivities for high speed driving. Kind of like how NBA and NFL players are forbidden to own motorcycles or in some cases, not even allowed to play pick-up basketball. I agree with your comment about "most drivers" but part of the mystique of The Stig is that he could be literally anyone- up to the rumors it's been some current F1 drivers, even rumblings it was Lewis Hamilton at times. You can see where McLaren might not like someone like him running around in crazy fast street cars without true safety equipment, right?
