I've heard the rule of thumb for Lug stud thread is you need 1.5 X the width of the lug, as the length of available thread, I've ran wheel spacers on my STI and nothing broke or fell off

Mine may have only been 3mm or something low though. I've ran them on my rally car as well with out any issues (have more thread to work with on that one though)
