Either way he will have a hard time fitting them because the wheel off set not so much the tire size. I can run a 305 with my widebody with the right offset wheel however i am having troubles running 275 without rubbing because i have a 10.5 +22 wheel. By the looks of the picture you posted i would get a less tall tire, a "265", loads of camber, and a fender roller. Or you can do what reid did to his evo and flair the rear fenders. I think pancho charged him like 500$ and you can fit those 285 no problem with stock camber in the rear and a little more -camber in the front.
Why would I be comparing tire sizes of different manufacturers? I'm not even comparing tire sizes of different tires made by the same manufacturer. I'm not even talking about a single, specific tire. I'm talking about the way tire sizes and offsets are defined.

The fact is, because of the way math works, 285/35/18 on a 18x10+35 requires almost 1.5" more fender side clearance than a 255/40/17 on a 17x8+55.
