What I want to know is how having the accessory belt come off ruined your short block. Normally all that would happen is that the alternator, power steering pump, and air conditioner would stop spinning.
Perhaps it was the timing belt that came loose? 'Course then the short block would still be okay, but your valves and pistons might be ruined... which would mean head work and a new bottom-end potentially, but unless the car made a seriously huge boom when it happened, the short block would be fine.
