Well, ours didn't shoot a rod through the block, it had a piston let go (probably from contacting a valve) and the resultant 10 million pieces of piston & rod cracked the bottom wall of that cylinder as they flailed about.

Anything can happen when internals run into each other, even in a Subaru motor... no one will know until it's opened up for analysis.
