Man Jumps From 5th Floor of Mall, Hitting Woman Below

It was a bizarre scene at the San Francisco Shopping Center Wednesday, when a man apparently jumped twice from an upper level of the mall, landing on another person in one of his falls.

Police said the 22-year-old man was lucky to have survived the incident. They said they knew of no motive, but did detain two men for questioning who may have been acquaintances of the jumper.

Witnesses say it all started about 2:30pm, when the man was in the Nordstrom area of the mall with two friends. Suddenly, witnesses say, the man jumped from the 5th floor to the ground floor, landing on a woman sitting at a café table. They say he then bolted away as people tended to the victim.

"He got up, apparently bewildered, went back upstairs, and that's when I saw him free-falling the second time, onto the espresso machine," said witness Martin Kirkwood. "It was a very horrible sight."

The espresso machine was hit so hard that there was a dent in it.

Both the jumper and the victim were taken to the hospital, but their injuries were not life-threatening, police say.
