I've been using US Bank since I moved to Nevada 3 years ago, and I've been pleased with their service. I opened an account with BoA a month ago because I'm living on the road right now, and US Bank doesn't have very many branches back east.
When I opened the account, they said that most of BoA was on the same system, but some states had different systems from different bank groups that they are still working on merging into the main system. California, Idaho, Boston, and a few other areas are on systems that aren't the main BoA system. They are apparently working on bringing everyone onto the same system, but those migrations take time. I suppose this is the practical consequences for merging together so many banks like Bank of America did in the late 90s.
FWIW, BoA said I'd be able to pull money out of any BoA bank/ATM nationwide, but I wouldn't be able to deposit money at ATMs that weren't on the main BoA system, and those banks wouldn't be able to tell me specific information about my account (what checks had cleared, etc). I actually haven't tried moving money around yet, so I can only assume that's correct.
