No, you are thinking of the Kzin, Inteligent large Cat/Tiger like creatures from Niven's Known Space and Man Kzin Wars series.

The Kzinti are 4 inteligent species that evolved on the same planet in the void and tried to destroy man kind because the makers of the void from another dimension or some such told them to.
