Well, since I know the "new school" (Petter Solberg/Seb Loeb) style of rally driving is to reduce drifiting as much as possible, I gave that a major effort... but I'm just faster sliding a lot. I was guessing that the GT4 people made the cars slide way too much for a reason, they want you to drift. So, I've been trying to drive the way the game is programmed, not the way real life works.
Like that long tightening sweeper I mentioned earlier. Driving the realistic line is just slow compared to hanging the back way out... and really slow compared to just bouncing off stuff.
