Default why drive by wire?

Why are so many cars using drive by wire throttle body/gas pedal setups? I searched a little and the only reason I could find was giving the computer control over the car to improve gas mileage. Aren't the computers fast enough to modify the fuel and timing setups based upon the throttle plate opening and closing? Granted, I'm not a mechanic or automotive engineer but it seems like a lot of extra production cost that would yield small gains. Anyone care to enlighten my dumbass?
Thanks
