I can't really tell anything from that picture, it's kinda small & I haven't been around WRX's enough to recognize individual engine parts like that from memory.
Again, I don't really know about the WRX but most cars have a separate "low oil" light that comes on if the oil level sensor in the pan reads low.. "check engine" usually means other sensors are reading out of spec. Scott drives around with a CEL showing most of the time.
