The washer mod has been known to fail, since it's still not totally secure. People have the hole in the topmount bored out wider by vibrations and odd stuff like that.

Yup, nothing worse than an ovalized rear hat hole! Its what eventually happened with our original experience. The strut spigot still moved a bit and eventually ovalized the hole even more. No amount of spacers was going to make up the difference.

I looked at doing this when I was getting rid of my coilovers (in fact, I think you pointed me to the washer mod thread on NASIOC orginally), and decided based on all the feedback that it wasn't worth the potential trouble.
