The rule for SM is that the battery needs to be out side of the passenger compartment, which is anywhere behind the rear seats. SM says nothing about battery boxes.
The GCR though requires the battery to be either in a sealed enclosure, or a dry-cell battery, as well as bolted down independently of any enclosure.
Since I've got a dry-cell Optima, I should be fine in both SM and Trials with it bolted to the trunk in that location.
