Aside from potential rubbing (looks like it would be minimal at steering limit) and a slow speedo reading, what other downsides might there be?

Less effective torque, but it won't matter.
I'm thinking of selling all 10 of my 17X7.5 rims and using the money to buy these:
17x8
$288 (each)
Offset: 45mm
Backspacing: 6.25"
Bolt Pattern: 5-100
Rec. Tire Size: 225/45-17
Weight: 15.0lbs.

But Alex is trying to talk me into getting some 16X8's. The only options I've found in that size are heavy, ugly Rota Slipstreams (though they do come in black and they're cheap) and Volks $$$$$$$$$$$$
