The snorkus by itself brings air to the fender from the highest-pressure location on a moving car. The silencer assembly or a silencer-delete elbow brings it back around to either the factory airbox or the engine compartment (often pointing at an aftermarket SRI).
Cobb Tuning even designed their air box around the snorkus:
