I was googling for rally schools around here and came across this !
its only $110 and you get 1.5 days of classes and a Mini Rally !! its an SCCA event (probably can tell form the url)
http://www.sfrscca.org/RallyX/?rallyschool2006

As usual my understanding of the event is that cars will go around some cones. I'm guessing if i'm going to enter at least 2 scca events i should just go ahead and join the scca .

Anyways i'm wondering who else might be interested. And / Or if there are other rally type schools/ events that may be a bit closer ? seems like you are driving on a dirt road in a big grass field so minimal paint danger from some stray pebbels in the dirt will be the big concern, and hitting cones.
(if i didn't snowboard i'de be going crazy waiting for these motor events!)

they have classes for Navigators, and pit crew also. i've already got a friend of mine who is gonna take the navigator classes and nav man for me also 2 drivers can share 1 car (way more info on that url)

If June 10/11 is open for me, and I can convince them that hardtop+rollbar=fixed roof, I'd be down.

"Vehicles with bolted-on hardtops and fixed roll bars may be granted special allowance by the Safety Steward. "

Sounds like yes that is Allowed. but maybe ask specifically about your setup

Thought you had something with an M+S rating ? you mean out of the 3 or 4 sets of tires not one is at least an all season ? lol , go buy more tires !

I'd run my Toyo Proxes 4's. They're M+S rated and they work okay in the snow. I'm sure they'd be fine, but they're wide and the tread pattern doesn't look anything like an offroad tire.

Wider is better for Dirt and Mud. as you want to Float more in mud / sand / soft dirt.
skinny for snow so you Sink down and hopefuly make some contact with the tarmac under there. (also riding skinny tires through deep snow really keeps you going straight) At least i have it in my lil head that this is ideal. if someone knows better, correct me
Sick photo btw

I'd love to go, but I don't think it'll be possible for me to make it.

Cheapo snows on cheapo wheels would probably come in under $400 through TR.

That rules, I can rally-x my Miata! Unfortunately, there's a Club Trials event that weekend.

I bought a set of steelies off Hoche a while back, he's one of those weird OB drivers.

In all seriousness, he's a good guy, and will probably let the Miata play if you let him know you're ex-scooby and you know what to expect on a rallyx course.

Yeah, getting in would probably be no problem, but there's a Club Trials event conflicting.

Hey, the better option would be to get good snow tires on cheapo wheels and have primo tires for next snow season. Actually, don't you already have a set of snows? If so they would be fine for rally-x.

Nope, no snows, just the Proxes 4's which wear like iron. I'm planning to replace them with snows since they're on the OEM wheels. I would have got real winter tires, but I lived in Santa Rosa at the time. Oh well, they work fine in the snow and should be ok in the mud I guess.

will i want to run with really really high psi (40-38 ish?), since i'm on 17's 225/45/R17
or do you always run a very high psi on an autox / rallyx type event to reduce tire roll under and just deal with the bounciness ?

Typicly low traction situations call for lower, not higher pressures. The objective is to get the tire to sculpt to the terain. I think Baja 1000 trucks and such run pressures in the teens with special bead lockers to keep the tires from coming off the rims.

You're not planning on running at rallycross on RE070s are you? That would kinda suck. But for autocross, yeah, 38-40 psi is close to what most of the others using those run them at.
