Default New Porche Turbo!

Today on my way to Lake Tahoe there was a new Porche Turbo so I used him as a pace car and man this thing was sick. The guy kept trying to pull away from me but every time he tried I was right there even when we were both on it he could not pull away and I could not gain on him. I am loving my little $25.000 boxer engine it pumps it out that Porche was like $90.000 lol very pimp.[/i]

Once again I think... he probably wasn't really racing, especially since you guys were rolling along at speed already, so launching skill wouldn't have anything to do with it.

(From edmunds.com),

2003 Porsche Turbo:

Weight: 3388lbs
Power Output: 415bhp @ 6000RPM
Torque Output: 415lb*ft @ 2700RPM
Power/weight ratio: 0.12249

2002 Subaru Impreza:

Weight: 3085lbs
Power Output: 227bhp @ 6000RPM
Torque Output: 217lb*ft @ 4000RPM
Power/weight ratio: 0.07358

Power/weight ratio usually says it all when it comes to acceleration, it's basic physics. Even if your WRX is pimped out and pumping out 300bhp, it still couldn't keep up. Not to mention the Porsche is a 6-speed manual with shorter gearing than the WRX, so it can put that power to the ground more effectively. Oh, and the Porsche is listed at about $124,000, not $90k.

But again, it could be a driver related loss. Meaning, the driver of the porsche could suck at driving or he wasn't trying to race.

the porch(sp i know) is geared like poopies. those cars have triptronic shifters that are slow as molasis in january.

i dont mean to get on your case ALM. however let me talk of something i know. my bike has a p/w ratio of .40 no really .40 however a busa has a p/w ratio of .33 therfore i am faster right? well unfortuantly no. i am not. at least not in stock form. however i just changed my gears... a simple 1.5 hour job. and now i am so fast it hurts. sometimes p/w ratio isnt everything. gearing plays a huge a factor. thats why muscle cars usually wreck the imports. they have stupid high final drive ratios. could a porch beat big "e" through the twisties? hmmmmmm if it was an awd model which i have seen all of one in reno, like ever. then maybe but id still take our front drive engine over a rear drive engine any day. those things throw out too much and you cant control them even with the uber expensive awd system.

in this case we would probably want to compare skidpads and slalom speeds rather then p/w ratio. and even as i type this i know the porches skidpad is higher than a stock wrx. but i know what mine is too

let me finish with this. i was on the freeway awhile back and a 01 yamaha r6 pulled next to me and gave me the thumbs up. then i saw him duck down, so i knew he was going to floor it. this is a bike with a p/w ratio of .31 and could destroy my car throught the twisties. so i figured what the hell... dumped to 3rd and blipped the throttle and we were off. even my p/w ratio isnt as high as his. however at 135 mph i was still ahead. and my fifth gear has stock boost for freeway cruising. after 135 i slowed and he proved that bikes have got that highend thing goin for them.

conclusion??? why did i win? all the numbers were in his favor... even a shitty rider should have been able to plaster me especially from a roll on. sooooooooooooooooo??????

See that people putting words in my post's I never said we raced I said he tried to pull away from me and could not. We did not get over 135mph and I know that car will go past 150mph so on a open stretch he could have lost me but not in the turns. I have my boost set at 16PSI I know I might have around 300hp at the crank but why do I hang with big hp cars and when I do every one thinks I am blowing smoke up there ass. What I think is that some people on the site DONT KNOW HOW TO DRIVE FOR SHIT and once again thanks to Phil for knowing what he is talking about and knowing how to drive his car. Oh ALM how much hp is your Crutang you want to line them up I bet you get smoked of the line so bad even with all your mods I know how to drive my car unlike some people.

Well, I wasn't talking about the twisties, that's another matter - he was only describing going in a straight line on the highway. I fully realize a car's gearing has a huge effect on acceleration. I think the Porsches are more capable than you're making them out to be; first of all you can get it with a 6-speed manual gearbox, they don't all come with the 5-auto tiptronic slushbox. All new Porsche "Turbo" models are AWD too, actually (the only exception is the GT2, which is a turbo RWD and even faster than the regular "Turbo"). According to WRXtuners.com and Road & Track, the gearing between a WRX and Porsche turbo is as follows:

Final Drive Ratios by gear:

WRX:

1st: 13.4706
2nd: 7.5933
3rd: 5.3274
4th: 3.7908
5th: 2.8782
6th: -----

Porsche Turbo:

1st: 13.1408
2nd: 7.052
3rd: 4.8504
4th: 3.8528
5th: 3.1648
6th: 2.58

1995 Mustang GT (just for comparison so everyone can see how bad my gearing sucks ):

1st: 10.318
2nd: 6.1292
3rd: 4.0964
4th: 3.08
5th: 2.0944

You can see that the WRX has slightly shorter ratios in 1st-3rd gears, but not by much. It's a little bit of an advantage, but in my opinion not enough to overcome the clear power (and low end torque) advantage of the 6-speed Porsche.

I dont think you have ever rode in my car so there is no way for you to know what I am talking about when it comes to keaping up with a Porche. Cause I know for a fact that your car would not have hung with my car or that Porche in the twisties so go ahead and dog cause you will never know.

I don't mean to start any more sparks, but......

This argument is pretty much a waste. There are so many variables, that on the street, you can't be too sure who would win.

If you want, next time take the turbo porsche to the track (legal track) and race him in the 1/4. If you can smoke him then, props to you.

I am not trying to start anything. If you kept up with him....SWEET!

I don't doubt you. Your car is quick, but don't get me wrong, unless I was there, it still is pretty amazing to keep up with a 125,000$ supercar. Again, I am not calling you a liar.

and p.s. - Where the hell are you crusin to see these sweet cars? I gatta start going that way home.

Well if you were driving through the twisties it's a different story, it's more about the driver - you didn't describe that in your first post so I assumed you were just going straight on the highway. My apologies if you were offended. As for my car;

1) I've never had the car on a dyno, so I don't know how much power it's making.
2) I don't seriously race people on the street, so no thanks.
3) My car is not set up for drag racing, I'm building it for autocrossing/road racing, so I'm sure it would get smoked off the line - even Scott's WRX when it was factory stock was way faster off the line than my car.
4) I'm not even going to go there comparing driving skill.

amen my brother. i would loose to an awd drive volvo in the snow.

ill battle a mustanger on an autox while im still set for draggin. i dont care what ya got...

fuck static. i left the i-club forum cause they all were stupid as hell and only believ whats printed in a magazine. truth is vishnu is really good friends with all of the important editors at most of the import magazines. hence all the really good coverage. show me times, show me facts, or just plain show me and i believe. ill leave this forum too if peeps get outta control with the whole my cars faster than yours.

my final post on the i-club was my timeslip. and that was when the fastest wrx was only running 12.4. i didnt even watch the replies cause i knew most of them would just question how i did it and whether or not it was real.

static hurts everyone.

cant we all just get along.

Agreed. This is a local 'friend' like forum. Might as well keep it civil.

Once the Fernley race way opens the 1/4 strip, then we can all play with our times. I know mine should be in the 15's or something

no offense guys but i will laugh alot when that day comes. wrx's in reno run sooooo slow. when i was running stock as hell i was lucky to squeeze out a 14.7 at like 96mph. as i told big "e" you know your wrex is making power when you have to physically hold it gear when you launch.
