Im "that one kid"
Default Might lose my car...

I got a speeding ticket yesterday going down mae anne. Cop said i was doing 49 in a 25 but i told him that was impossible due to cars being in front and behind me. So he let me go with a 1-10 basic speeding ticket. I get home after school and tell my parents. My mom loses it... saying how if i cant come up with $1600 or so by November, then she's gonna turn in my license and possibly sell my car. Definately a "no bueno" situation. So now the only thing that is keeping me alive are my grades. She's worried about their insurance rates going up as well as mine, because I already pay ~ $300 a month for insurance. Does anyone know how much my insurance should raise due to the speeding ticket? Any help gladly appreciated.

forgot to add that this is my second ticket. the first one it was 51 in a 35... but it got waved because it was my first ticket. But the judge said that if I got another one, that i would have to pay for both fines. Im hoping she just doesnt include the demerits (sp?) for the last one also, because then im pretty sure that my insurance is gonna be like $400+

I'm sure Art's got all kinds of info for ya... he's an insurance agent (and several board members are his clients, me included).

It sounds like your mom is overreacting a bit. Basically, you'll either be able to afford the insurance, or you won't. Flipping out isn't going to make the situation better... I'm sure when the ticket comes, and when the next insurance bill has to get paid, you'll fully understand why you shouldn't be speeding on a provisional license. Especially if you have to sell the car.

I'm not up on all the laws and such... but I wonder if going before the judge and asking for a reduced sentence might help. I know in CA you can go to traffic school and avoid having the insurance company find out about the ticket... not quite sure that's the case in NV, but there might be something the judge can do. Just use that "winning charm" that you're always annoying us with at the meets. And of course there's always the chance that the cop won't show to the court, in which case you're off free.

Well there goes my plan. It sounds like you were already given a second chance! What the hell are you doing still speeding!?! Especially considering you've got a 2.5 Auto... you have to try hard to go fast in one of those, you can't "accidentally" be going 100 in a car like that like you can in an STi.

There is quite a bit that can happen if you are still under 18. The judge takes a totally different approach as compared to someone over 18.

First off, hope you get a different judge. Even if you get the same one, hope she doesn't remember what she said before She can still remove this one of your record if she wants! I got 2 removed before I was 18. You may have to do traffic school or some type of impact panel, but again, its totally up to the judge.

If she removes the incident, your insurance company nor the DMV will have any record of it. This is what you want to happen.

Now, if the judge does not remove the ticket, you will want to do driving school to at least remove the demerit points from your license. This DOES NOT remove the incident though. Insurance will catch up at this point down the line and your insurance will go up.

If you want some general ideas on what a policy might go up, call me at my office and ill give you some basic ideas. 775-787-6333.

Hopefully, the judge will drop your ticket......again.

Do you pay for insurance on the 6 month plan or month to month..If you get a 6 month policy the ticket and rate increase will not take effect until the new policy is sent.

Month to Month policies ARE 6 month policies just with a payment option.

You are right that the company will not find out about it right away. Typically a insurance company will only run a MVR (motor vehicle report) every 6 months...sometimes longer.

only 300 a month for insurance?!? thats a f*kin deal man considering your age and the type of car you drive... i think your mom was over reacting.. if i were to be "self insured" i'd be paying close to 3600$ for 6 months  ... that boils down to 600+ a month. I think i pay 300 a month now.

Anyway, i doubt your insurance will increase 100 dollars a month.. it seems unreasonable since your first ticket was "waved" and the ticket you just recieved wasn't a huge violation. Things probably wont be a problem.

like scott said earlier... you'll be able to afford the insurance or not. Things will be fine

Most insurance policies dont go up unless you have like two incidents over the course of a period of time. I dont know about younger ages or which plan/carrier you have though...

$300 a month is alot, you might want to think about switching to just liability or something along those lines.

It depends on the officer I bet if he added reckless and whatever 30 over is and excess of 100 you might be able to pull off an over 350 dollar ticket.

I had a 365 dollar ticket once!

I would love to know which companies don't raise your rate unless you get 2 tickets.

Almost ALL insurance companies provide a Good Driver discount. This means ticket and accident free. If you get even 1 ticket, you loose this discount. This means even one ticket and your policy goes up. There might be companies that do not surcharge your first incident, that could be the only thing I could think of.

His only hope is to get it removed. With his age, year of that car, and with a speeding ticket...I think you would all be very surprised the amount it can raise.

It is still a newer car. If it was stolen, he would be out a lot. I still add what we call 'Fire & Theft' to even 1980's cars. This isn't comprehensive or collison coverage, but it does cover the car in the event of a theft or fire.
