Wow. That sounds like "how to make the surface street signal system even more inefficient". They say the cross-traffic is still held by a red anyways? Jeez.

That's a cool idea. A bit brute-ish, but I know that road, and it'll really help out the people that live there with all the idiots that use it to cut from freeway to freeway.

What I'd really like to see are even more intelligent lights that will adapt to the cars on the road to get them to their desination faster, instead of punishing them. Sure someone may be speeding, but he won't feel that he has to if all the lights are green for him along his route.

Sunrise ave. in Sactown seems to be speed timed.....meaning, if you start at gold river near the american river bridge and keep a speed of 45 mph you can make it all the way to greenback on greens. Then from there you have to speed up a little(to make up for the red light) and you can get to cirby lane np =)

I've wondered about this for a while. With all the communication links to every intersection these days, coupled with modern computing speed and low cost, how hard would it really be to network the lights and estimate incoming traffic flow to any given intersection? The priority weighting could vary slightly depending on time of day --- heck, the weighting could be automatically updated once a month or something based on observed traffic volume in each lane through the intersection during the same time intervals on each day. Initially what we're talking about here is the quasi-intelligent ability of a light to alter its timing by a few seconds in either direction based upon speed & volume observations from neighboring intersections. The amount of flexibility would either be pre-weighted based on time of day/cross-traffic volume or be weighted in real-time based on current cross-traffic volume.

If the system breaks, the lights could always drop back to the stupid default settings they have now.

Call me crazy, but I spent way too much time during my delivery days of observing (and cursing) traffic-light patterns rather than driving to my next destination.

Bingo. Timed lights really help traffic. McCarran could *really* use them. And if you were to add the camera deal that the article talks about to help the timing instead of stopping speeders, even better.

Umm, all it's going to do is snarl up traffic even worse than that cluster-fuck of a town already has now, and make local area tailpipe emissions & gas consumption go up. WTF are these idiots thinking?

Let's make our traffic, air quality, and gas prices all worse in one fell swoop! It'll be great!

Now that, on the other hand, I could go for.

[EDIT]: Oh, and people who think like this: "It's kind of big-brotherish, but sometimes it's the price we pay for safety," - should be shipped off to mother Russia where they belong.

...and don't forget to give them their ration of government issue white bread.

Actually, if the traffic light is publicized enough, it might keep people from cutting between 580 and 680. If they know they won't be able to speed, they might stick to the freeway. 'Cause you know there will always be some 'tard out there hauling ass anyway triggering the light for all the people that are going the limit.

We shouldn't have safety precautions, they only protect people who shouldn't be breeding. Darwin would not approve! It's like the guy who is looking for a new employee who throws out half the resumes he gets without even reading them, because he doesn't want to hire unlucky people.

Resumes? At IGT, you don't get a job unless you know someone that works there.

Nick got his because I recommended him. I got mine because Matt recommended me. Matt got his because a family friend got him an interview.

Where there's a real problem area, slow 'em down with speed humps. Not that I'm a fan of them myself, but seems like that would help, rather than punishing everybody traveling there.

Anyway, I thought "adaptive traffic systems" - smart lights, radars, traffic flow data, are being piloted in various places already.

Speed Humps = jumps... as long as you have rally tuned suspension I've caught huge air at the ones near Dean's house, but you have to be going like 45.

I've hit the ones near Windy Hill at "significantly faster than 45". It's one hell of a way to check for squeeks and rattles in the suspension!

Are you talking about those 'traffic calming's?
I shooda known this forum would see the upside of these supposed traffic controls.
