Default I smell.... clutch :(

Starting to smell clutch pretty bad when I "launch". I think I'm feathering the clutch too much. I guess I'm too used to my old cars with proper clutches.

Nonetheless, is there a remedy other than replacing the clutch? Reason I ask is that with the auto-x coming this weekend, I know I'm going to grind what's left of the clutch down pretty quick, and wondering if there's a technique to make it through the weekend without fail to give me time to swap in the new set up.

And on that note, anyone down to assist in a clutch swap? Will I need to drop the tranny? Only clutches I've done were on old VWs, meaning drop the engine and swap, Subarus are a mystical being at this time to me.

Best left to a shop? (KSpeed, wanna put a quote together for clutch install, flywheel resurface and install, DP install, and proper tune?)

I just emailed you a quote for the clutch job Rory. As for this weekend, the best advice is to simply be nice to your clutch. Don't do full launches until you get it replaced. It makes a pretty small difference in your times.

And I usually am nice to the clutch, but every once in a while, ya know

And I'm pretty sure I'll puss out and bog my first few passes anyway

Stage 2 is gonna be nice

So after talking to KSpeed and a couple others yesterday, I struggled to get the car home - feathering the clutch to avoid chatter and stalling from stop.

Turned from get it done very soon to need it done immediately.

Getting the new clutch installed tomorrow, really tallying up the quantity of stickers I gotta make in trade here

lol - no sh*t!

Especially since it's rent week/mortgage, and I wouldn't be able to afford a new clutch and install.

The "new" clutch (Exedy Organic), new throwout bearing seems to be a much stiffer combination that stock - gonna take some getting used to. Driving the WRX then getting into Jenn's '10 Impreza was left left shock, not it's soo much worse (she's gonna hate the new clutch )

A few months back, before I bought the WRX, we drove the snot out of an '06 Evo SE - 6 speed, suede Recaros.... I said "this clutch is too stiff for a driver, but the power is addictive, gonna have to go for the WRX" We also drove a '10 WRX and '08 WRX, both seems like lumps compared to the '07, and especially the Evo. Fast forward to yesterday, I said "this car almost feels just like the Evo, and it's so nice ". Can't wait til it's tuned today

And the noises this car makes now that it's got an exhaust and downpipe will likely kill my fuel economy, the power and sound is truly addictive.

Is that the same as the "stage 1" Exedy clutch? That's what I have. I think it's supposed to be very similar to stock, with a touch more clamping force. Give it some time to break in. After a while you won't notice the difference. My girlfriend has no complaints about driving my car. I always ask her if she hates this or that (harshness, noises, etc) but she loves driving my car.

Make sure you break the clutch in properly. I think you're supposed to do a couple launches and then drive it normally, but don't trust me.

I got it used from Austin, so it's broken in, and seated, etc. The whole package was apparently installed together new (clutch, pressure plate, flywheel) and they all look to be in the same shape. But yeah, I broke it in fairly well last night no launches though, waiting for the tune on that one

But, will be trying a few launches this evening so I don't make as much of a fool of myself tomorrow.

Folks.... Stop "launching" your Subarus! That's not what they're for. If you wanna drive like that, go get a beater fox body mustang. Hard awd launches eat transmissions for breakfast.

Tell that to Sunday's course last event.

Fortunately, the starts at courses in Stead rarely require a good launch.

I fail to see how the design of the course makes your foot side-step the clutch. You do in fact have a choice as to how you drive.

Oh that's good times.

And, I haven't "launched" the car - I burnt up the clutch (that was definitely on it's way out anyway, and original, with 85k), by feathering it like a new:. I came out a little too far at the freeway offramp at McCarren (think Woody's), saw a truck coming, and since I was too far out to just stop I gave it a bit much gas, and feathered the clutch out so to not drop the clutch, thereby making it smoke, stink, and generally turn into a piece of poop. Basically rendered the car undrivable from 0 in first, otherwise it was ok (chattered like a mofo). The stiffer clutch is definitely teaching me to be easy on it, hence why I need to make sure I'm not going to stall the car tomorrow (but dropping the clutch at 6k is so much fun, no )

(launching to me involves e-brake squat set, lineloc, 4k rpm, and clutch drop; and I definitely suck at that sort of launch)

I thought Austin's clutch was a 6 puck or at least stage 2?

What clutch is it that you have now? It felt pretty sweet to me yesterday. I didn't even notice it was not stock.

Clutch is the Exedy Stage 1 Organic I believe, new OE to bearing and a lightned flywheel (ACT Streetlight?). Austins old setup before 6mt swap

Feels oh so good now. The cars exactly where I wanted it to be as far aw power and sound. Now to get on the suspension.

Mine was the stage 2 (or that's what gruppe-s told me it was). Yea Rory, it took me a couple days to get used to. I stalled it a few times the first few night haha.

So then I have stage 2? Eh, either way, I have a newish clutch that feels great, grabs quick, and handled a few hard shifts today. Uber happy with the way it's all setup and tuned. Now for a little less slop in the shifter, and suspension
