Subaru gas tank size question - Subaru Enthusiasts Car Club of the Sierras

I have a 97 Subaru impreza outback sport automatic, in the manual it says the gas tank is 15.9 gallons but on several online sources they say it has a 12.3. I feel like I should trust the manual but fill ups are generally around 11 gallons but could my gauge be off? Or could it have a large reserve for some reason? (it has no low fuel light)

Subaru OBDII tanks are all 15.9 gallons. Are you sure you're letting it go low enough to get the low fuel light on?

Yeah, im pretty sure there isnt a low gas light. Now I'm even more confused the manual says 15.9 but on the back of the manual it says the little quick info things and it says 12.3 gas tank

wait until you are almost empty and then put a couple gallons in a 5 gallon "can" and then run it dry and you will know.

The reason only a couple in a 5 is it way less likely to spill, leak or put fumes in the car.
