OMG Internet!
Default Bugeye Headlights

I was telling Dean about this for Sue's wagon tonight.

It's an email between me and Daniel Stern of http://www.danielsternlighting.com/

Quote:
I have a 2003 Subaru Impreza WRX. The headlights have been cracked open to paint parts of the housing black, but I don't think that matters.

>It means the water seal has been compromised...keep an eye on them to see that they don't get wet inside.

I have "high performance" 9007 bulbs from NAPA in there now.

>NAPA doesn't sell any 9007 bulb worth buying. The best 9007 bulbs presently on the market are the GE Night Hawk 9007NH and the Philips VisionPlus 9007VP. I don't presently stock either bulb, but www.amazon.com seems to have the 9007NH on permanent sale.

Avoid Sylvania Silverstar/Ultra, Wagner TruView, PIAA, Hoen, and all other brands of blue-glass "extra white" or "xenon matching" bulbs. They are a scam; despite the advertising hype, they significantly reduce headlamp performance rather than increasing it.

Best DS
I've been running the Night Hawk's for almost a year and between them and keeping the lenses clean and polished, they're actually adequate.

Deals dead, but to give you an idea how cheap they get: http://slickdeals.net/forums/showthread.php?t=1801353

How old is that conversation? Doing some more searching, it appears the Philips X-treme has surpassed the VisionPlus.

Best deal is through neweggmall. http://www.neweggmall.com/Product/20...tml?quantity=1

If those are not bright enough, I might suggest a wiring mod next since Scott doesn't want to sell his EDM HIDs.

February of last year. I have another set of the Night Hawks waiting to go in since I bought one set and got one set free.

Good find on that thread, but hopefully you can find those bulbs for less. They're almost $50 shipped from Newegg.

That is the best deal I could find. That is for a pair though.

If they're better than the Nighthawks, and it sounds like they are, they're well worth it. It's just that the Nighthawks are less than half the price when on sale at Amazon.

Those headlights will be the absolute last thing I'll sell from my car.

In fact, even if I sold the car, I'd probably hang on to the headlights just on the off chance that I might buy another bugeye in the future. It took me like 8 months and $800 to get those lights, and that's where they were "easy" and "cheap" to get.

OK! You like your headlights. What man doesn't like a good set of headlights.

Hopefully she will be happy with a set of bulbs and having her lenses polished. Now there is a new euphemism for something.

If anybody sees a set of bugeye EDM or 1/2 decent HID conversion for a reasonable price, let me know.

Do not put HIDs in non-projector lamps. It's illegal and incredibly annoying to every driver you point the car at.

For the most part this is true, but now they do have HID kits that have the same bulb shapes as the halogen bulb they're replacing. Theoretically, the light pattern should be identical, but the output is greater.

As far as legality... I've got not clue. In CA, it's probably illegal.

Are those the kits that cost next to nothing? I have my doubts. Besides, I'd rather have halogen projectors than HID reflectors any day,

The bulb base is the right shape, but typically the bulb itself is shaped differently and the filament is in the wrong spot relative to the reflector. This usually results in a poor cutoff and lots of glare for oncoming traffic.

I've had HIDs in my projectors for about a year and a half. It very well may be annoying, but no one has flashed their brights at me, as opposed to 3-4 people when I had my stock bulbs right after I bought my car. Could be because everyone knows they are low beams because they are HID, but that is my experience with them, take it for what it's worth. I've also had my girlfriend tell me it's really annoying when I'm driving behind her.
