Mike, trust me on this... skip the Utec and wait another few weeks for the STi EcuTek reflash. The Utec has a couple of faults that can cause problems on stock motors. I'll explain it in more detail this weekend.

It's basically because they try to drive the ignition coils directly. See, nobody outside of FHI knows the dwell and voltage for Subaru coils. So it's best to let the ECU fire them, because it's set up properly. But TurboXS feels they would rather have direct control of the ignition rather than manipulating the signal to the ECU to make it fire the coils. This is not a good idea, as it leads to burned out coils, misfires, and detonation. Also, they are doing the same thing now with the fuel injectors- totally removing the ECU from injector firing. However, I think it's much less of an issue with the injectors. The resistance and voltage are known factors for stocks and STi pinks (which are identical except for the end cap spray nozzle). Plus, there is still the argument that piggybacks (which are devices that warp a signal into or out of the ECU to have a desired effect, i.e. reducing the MAF signal to lean out the mixture) are inherently inferior to simply making the ecu run leaner, or advance timing all by itself. Also, I personally have issues with what I think of as "injector timing"- something nobody anywhere ever seems to discuss. I'm positive that the exact timing of when the injector opens relative to when the intake valve opens is very important to the quality of combustion- and there is now way a piggyback or standalone can ever do it as accurately as the factory ECU does, especially when you can't make changes to this parameter with standalones or piggybacks. I don't know if EcuTek has included a way to change this parameter in a reflash, but my point is kind of that it SHUOLDN'T be changed I guess.

humm.. all i've heard is good things about the UTEC... it's operating more like stand alone fuel and e-manage. However, it still is a piggy back. i like the new boost features and injector scaleing.
