Car: 05 sti
Default i got a question

I went in to have a straight pipe made for my sti today and the guy said that it was pointless to run a straight pipe from the main cat back to my axel back exhaust. i thought that deleting the resonator and the one cat would allow better flow. i know its a noob question but i dont understand.

It won't gain you much of anything, except a lot of attention from the cops. Trust me I know.

Deal, did somebody say Deal? Oh, Dean, yeah that's me.

The biggest obstruction is probably the diameter change at the rear axle and the muffler.

A straight pipe on an 05 will be hella noisy. I'd at least put some sort of muffler at the back.

I don't think he means a full straight pipe all the way to the end, just a straight (non-resonated) midpipe from DP to axleback.

But yeah, it'll still result in a noise increase, even with the same axleback on there, and probably won't gain much.

For what it's worth, I've heard people complain that Stromung dual-tip exhausts are too loud when combined with a header and non-resonated midpipe, but I'm perfectly comfortable with mine. Haven't had a complaint from my wife, either, and never felt like I ought to add a resonator. Keep in mind that I'm normally aspirated, though.

My point is that a lot of this is purely subjective. . . I'd say if you can get it done for cheap, give it a shot.

so it wouldn't really do anything performance wise. and would running 3 inch turbo back really help that much.

It would set you up for when you go Stage II or higher in the future. That's one thing I like about my Borla Hush; I was able to purchase a 3" flange adapter to replace the 2.5" donut flange it came with when I went to a high flow cat. The hush uses a slip joint, no welding required.

In your case, since you have the stromung dp and an axleback, it would get you a nice straight length of exhaust to clean up diameter changes. I think you should go ahead and get it done. . . it wouldn't really hurt.

I asked Jeremy about it this afternoon, and he thinks you should go ahead and do it, too.

Oh, so we're talking about going catless with a full TBE basically. Well yah, do it and then get tuned.

And watch for boost spiking.

I think he wants to keep the cat pipe, but lose the resonator in the catback. I wasn't aware that he had the dp when I first posted.

You guys have it kinda rough in a way. . . my exhaust comes in only 4 pieces.
