Hill climb?!? I've heard about it but never knew what the reqs were to enter. I would love to do something like that since I've done it a few times before off the books. How does it work?

I barely know any details about it , its sometime in September
I **think** you just have to give them money and you can race (ferrari and porsche) I don't think they require anything for safety beyond a helmet and they allow convertibles.

That said I will be using my HANs and 4 point in the sti, and hans and 5 point in the rally car (will full cage) if the cost isn't too high (i'm guessing its around $500 ) ?

i think i need a physics mod for my sti so i won't wear out some 710s hmmf

I drove it 2.1 years and was the event master for 1.5 years for Audi Club's VC Hill climb and it is very cool with a big "but"....

You must be able to drive within your own and your car's limits 100% of the time, or it may/will kill you!!!

I drove my stockish A4 and blew up my 5K Quattro at VC but would no longer drive it in anything but a fully caged car w/HANS.

Maybe we need to move HC discussion to a new thread?

So its some time in September , i **think ** its a two day event not sure on cost

Dean any info??

But as it sounds like you've driven up it, know that they do not add any safety barriers anywhere. so any corner right now that has no guard rail will be that way for the hill climb.

Dean's right, if you fail to drive with in your cars and your own limits the end result could be death, very likely to be a totaled car, if you are extremely lucky then just some flat spots on your tires. but an accident / err is going to be a roll of the dice on if you die or not.

Wasn't there a viper driver that had just that happen while driving a friend's car with his friend's wife as a passenger? The risk if definitely there. I went up to watch one of the VC HCs probably 10 years ago, at that time you had to be a member of the Ferrari club or Cobra club in order to run. Coming up the backside, to me, is much scarier than coming up the front from Reno. I don't think there is one turn without a guardrail up the front. I don't like the idea of sliding off of a corner with no rail.

No mention of cost that I could find, I guess if you are worried about how much it costs you shouldn't be doing it...

Well their rules state 100 tread wear or greater. I just emailed them off for an invitation. if accepted i know i won't be buying 710s . if they turn me down maybe i will.

thanks for the info Dean

Now that there is a subie going, I think I may have to waste a morning and go check it out. If I had my suspension dialed in I'd love to join you

Did you end up going to the one in June or are you registered for the one in Sept? I totally forgot about the one in June, I wanted to go check it out.

I wonder if the start and finish are still in the same place as back in 2000-2001 when I drove in it.

With no safety equipment to speak of in my stock A4 and very little performance driving experience back then, I was quite happy to be under 4 minutes. 3:55.

Staying within my own and the car's limits were my only real goals besides having fun.

My own reason for not doing hill climbs is that those things are nearly mutually exclusive.

Wait, you're suggesting you can't have fun without exceeding your or the car's limits?

Remind me never to on track at a PDX with you.

I don't have much fun at 8/10s, which is as far as I'd be willing to go on a hill climb, safety gear or no. At a PDX it would be 9/10ths, and when there's competition involved, I want 10/10ths. Not 11, but I like the low-ish risk factor of running at a sanctioned race track with correct safety gear while I'm trying to go 10/10th. I don't like the idea of trying to win while trying not to get everything out of myself and the car is all. What I love about Solo is that on the days where I do find myself beyond a limit, the cost of the mistake is extremely small. At the track there's the possible of writing off a car, but I can accept that risk if I'm competing. Hill climbs bring a significantly greater risk of severe injury or death if I make a mistake though, and I'm not willing to accept that risk for the sake of competition.

I'd say you need a faster car if 8/10ths isn't any fun for you... but 7/10ths at the track in my SVX is still fun to me... so I think you're just nuts or something.

But seriously, going slow can still be fun if you're working on a particular aspect of your driving. The fun comes from improving over the course of the session/day... not just from driving around at speed.

10/10ths wasn't fast enough for me at the Hill climb. parts of that road make 300hp feel like you're riding a bicycle! that hill climb will make me mod my car a lot sooner than autoX/ track days will.

I did take a two corners at 11/10s and had an "oh shit I'm going to hit a cone" moment... but there were no cones (and no more road either) understeer for the freak out. 2nd time was understeer to snap oversteer to oh crap oh crap oh crap SAVE! it was actually due to gravel kicked up onto the road.

think next year i'll be using my fire suite + hans and i wouldn't be opposed to adding like a roll bar in there, i'de add cage to my STI, but only if it doesn't interfer with it being my grocery getter / friends jump into the back

Sure but you better go ahead and spring for the rest of the drivetrain, brakes, and you can throw away all your wheels smaller than 17" to make room for new ones.

Hmmm, cageing the STi is starting to sound a tad cheaper.
