The way out is through
Default The guy at Jack in the Box drive-thru window...

...offered to buy my SVX today.

I pulled up to the drive-thru window and the 1st words out of his mouth: "how much you want for that car?"

I was like... "10 grand..." then I started laughing and told the guy "but it's only worth like 3". What surprised me was before I could finish my sentence, he got excited and was asking for my phone number so he could set up a deal after he got off work. I think he figured out I was kidding 'cause he didn't press me on it... but $10k for a '94 SVX? Realistically, I think my car would go for around $6k, and I'd still be out like $2000 when you factor in all the work I've put into it.

So, I wonder what kind of car he thought it was? I think 'cause of the wedge design and red paint people must think it's an 80's Ferrari, or a Lotus or something?

I guess I should have stripped the subaru badges and sold it!

I remember the first time I saw an SVX was back in 93-94. It was at the old Century Theaters on S. Virginia where the Peppermill parking lot is now. I didn't know what it was either because I was like 13 or so, but I thought it was the coolest looking car I'd ever seen. It was blue with a black top, and it slowly drove by in front of me as I was walking up to the theater with my parents. I drooled at the time but I never really knew what it was until years later.

Virtually everyone has the same story. If Subaru had simply sold them for $25k instead of $32k in 1992 dollars, the car would have been a hit.

But Subaru decided that people just thought it was too quirky and no one liked it. I think the opposite was the case, people liked it 'cause it was quirky, but no one would spend the equivalent of $45k in today's $$ on a Subaru.

Like if BMW charged $50k for a Mini Cooper-S, you'd never see one on the streets. But since they're awesome quirky little cars and affordable, they're a hit.

It's a shame it's so hard to find SVXi in nice shape... but at least if you do, they're still cheap since no one remembers 'em and there's no demand. If I had to pick one Subaru to become a "classic" in the future, it's a toss-up between the '98 2.5RS and the SVX.

SVX, for sure. The '57 Chevy of the '90's . For Subaru people, anyhow.

Imagine how hard it's gonna be to find a new tranny and rear wheel bearings in 2050!

And you already bought one of the 5-6 remaining radiators in the US for it to boot......

IIRC, there were 11 left after I got #12.

But most people just buy an aftermarket one, since someone makes a really nice all-metal one with an integrated tranny cooler.
