Default Project RS - dirt/ice racer

So i made the decision that Project L(will be posting up this project soon) is going to be a tarmac only car so that meant i needed to find something for dirt and ice racing. Welcome Project RS.

I believe i'm going to keep this n/a for awhile so i can keep it more reliable because i dont want it to be breaking all the time when we are 5 hours away from home out in the woods some where. The engine and tranny will need to be changed out because they are on the fritz.

The car came with lowering springs, some black w/ chrome lip rims, injen cai, and ricer tail lights. So far i have replaced the lowering springs/rs struts with oem wrx stuff which ended up jacking the car up a good 2 inches lol. I also put on some non ricer'ish rims.

Wow a 2nd dirt lover here. Way to go

There's no Rally cross any where close
Thunder hill has a series called Thunder Cross, Lots of fun, smooth dirt, tractor graded + water truck. .9 mile course 30 turns 2 Minute runs, often 6 in a day + Fun runs.

also www.formularallyx.com has a great series for rally X .

I've got a 93 that's fully rally prepped. and an STI i dirt drive on occasion,

Welcome to the Brotherhood! (of dirt drivers that is)

what are your goals ? Are you going to Rally cross ? Full Stage? or just go on dirt drives? lmk i can recommend some good 'dirt' friendly tires and other lil tips. (like always use at least 36 psi, if not 40 for dirt fun on non off road tires) debeeding sucks

ok, time to start working on this beast.

We are excited to now have Deltacam on board as an official sponsor of the car!! We now have a set of fully built heads from Deltacam. I havent had a chance to play with them yet, been sitting in the box..more info to come on this though. I will say the guys over at deltacam have been awesome to work with!

http://www.deltacam.com/

starting to drop some weight...
swapping stock seats for Corbeau CR-1. ditching misc interior panels.

oh the joys of getting tar/sound deading out

took off those stupid vent block off plates. probably 3 lbs lost between the 3.

engine is out. typical spun rod bearing, now i have to find a 2.5n/a asap for ice races coming up in a month. anyone have one?

the popular ebay borla knockoff. going to coat and wrap it up. anyone have issues with them cracking after wrapping?

No experience with the ebay borla knockoff, but the borla headers are known for cracking (at least turbo Imprezas have seen a lot of this), especially if they're heat wrapped. However, coating the inside and the outside may actually help prevent cracking. YMMV.

Don't coat it, don't wrap it, just have a guy who can weld stainless steel on standby. If you're concerned about spool, just switch to a WRX/STi crossmember, header, and uppipe. You'll also need to replace the water neck or slightly modify the header- you'll see how when you go to put it on, it's not difficult.

The turbo manifold bolts right on to all the EJ dual-port motors.

It looks like it got pinched so the crossover pipe is too close to the passenger side pipes. Could put that side on and likely spread them apart.

Or just put on a set of ported turbo stockers and maybe a larger crossover pipe.

I have a set of coated MadDog's I'll sell you for cheap...

We do local stuff here in MN. There is an anual MN subaru ice race held in Orr Minnesota that we go to every year, we also plan on doing some events with the local audi club and were hoping that the scca gets in gear towards a rallyx in the snow.

finally was able to do something i have been wanting to do for awhile..put a thermo-tec blanket over the top of the block to keep the radiant heat out of the intake manifold. this in conjuction with our Phenolic Spacers and our Thermal Coating will keep the intake manifold very COOL!!

I would only put the oil filter "blanket" facing the headers if at all. All other surfaces of the oil filter should be permitted to radiate as much heat as possible. Depending on air flow, oil filters represent significant radiators of oil heat.

Ignore this if you have an external oil cooler.

updates. car is up and running now. didnt know that the valve lash wasnt adjusted so the valve tick was really loud. adjusted them to correct specs and its definitely quieter but still loud.

one of the best cheap/free mod ever has been completed...welded rear diff. i cant believe how much of a difference it makes...it is REALLY fun to let loose in the snow. i really wish i would have welded my diffs years ago cause its a blast. thanks again fuji!!

any input on how well a welded diff would hold up to .....I don't know,
maybe autox abuse? Would it be a beneficial mod for someone racing a ghetto lowbudget car in said form of motorsport?

I only have experience on a RWD subaru, but you end up shockloading it a lot more, and you'll start wearing the input shaft and R&P more, but hey, it's not like it's an expensive setup.

I think I can donate you a 4.11 R160 if you want to give it a shot.

Keep in mind that a welded diff at slow speed on the street is going to suck ass. Forget driving in parking lots without the rear end binding and hopping all over the place. Hell, even autocross is probably going to be too slow unless you learn to throttle-on drift all the slow corners like the go-karts do.
