I spelled it right, Sierras.

Are you one of those purists that don't like sierra to be pluralized because technically, it's all part of one mountain range?

The Sierra mountain range can be referred to as "the Sierras." But "sierra" is a spanish word that doesn't really translate directly to English, and shouldn't really be pluralized. So "high sierra" is correct. He's not a purist, he just understands grammar.

Well, I grew up hearing them referred to as the Sierras, and las sierras is the correct plural in Spanish for Snowy mountain rangeS.

And if you want some historical reference thanks to Google and project Gutenberg from 1915...
THE LAKE OF THE SKY - LAKE TAHOE:
IN THE HIGH SIERRAS OF CALIFORNIA AND NEVADA

And you can be all bitchy about it when people start pronouncing other Spanish words in Nevada correctly. and this would be more of a spelling/semantics issue than grammar anyway.

Yes, "the Sierra" is correct. But we all make that mistake in conversation.

I was additionally referring to the fact that we are NOWHERE near the "High Sierra".

I thought the High Sierra dress code was a little more strict.

Haha, I used to do a lot more of that sort of thing. Those photos are from Mt. Haeckel on the Evolutions Crest, 2007 IIRC. It's only 13,418.

My specialty is/was dayhiking. Back in 2002, for instance, a good friend and I dayhiked all of the CA 14'ers in one summer, in between work, family, and such. We've done a few things that either were firsts or had at least never been documented previously. I have quite a few good mountain climbing stories......

Oh, I threw those rules out the window years ago. I've got Teva open-toe sandal ascents on 4 or 5 14'ers and a few 13'ers, for instance. Three of which involved 4th class terrain.

Will winter ever end! 6" of snow at my house last night and Squaw Valley is re-opening for skiing this weekend.

At this rate, Squaw could probably start reprinting those Endless Winter shirts from 10 years ago (or so).

Do you have a 2010/11 silver pass? That will get you free. If it is last years like I have, then you have to pay. I still consider this the 2009/10 ski season - f'n Squaw!

What a cluster F this morning. Why is it that whenver there's a spinout or somebody parked in a place that blocks traffic, somebody else thinks it's a great idea to park right along side of them, blocking all traffic behind them? ...people...

I took Virginia all the way from Red Rock to downtown. I left at 8:30 and got to work by 9:15...better than I expected. 395 looked like a parking lot. I passed about 10 spinouts. I always enjoy watching pickup trucks trying to drive uphill in a perpetual sideways drift. That can't be as effective (or as safe) as feathering the throttle can it?

We're supposed to get another 7" in Stead today. Lovely.
