Default Winter Tires

Hello, I live in Stockton but love the hills so I find myself in Tahoe and Reno alot. With this in mind I am looking for some tire suggestions for my stock 02 WRX Wheels. I don't want a extreme snow tire but more a all-waether tire with great rain and perhaps good snow ability. Any suggestions?

Thanks Scott

Hey Scott, most of us run dedicated snow tires, like Dunlop Winter sport m2's or Blizzak lm-22's, which are pretty good in the dry. But as far as all season's, I've heard Pirelli P-Zero Nero's are decent...all I can say for sure is Toyo Proxes FZ4 are not very good, I had those on my last car and they were scary.

see ya

Sumitomo HTR+ and BFG KDWS are very good all season performance tires. I've also heard the new Continental Extreme Contact has gotten good reviews, but I have yet to try them myself.

Though not specifically dedicated snow tires, Sid just mounted some Sumitomo HTR+ for me, and they feel different, they feel great!

After 37,900 miles, the RE92's are done. Down to nearly 2/32nds left. 37,000 is not bad on the stock tires, and they did fine by me, but the Sumitomos definitely feel different. I'll have to let you all know how they handle in the snow -- once we get some!

Hey Scott! Glad you made it to the board! (Me and Tyson were the guys you met at Sears Point)

Anyway, I have the Blizzak LM-22's on my stock rims for winter. They seem pretty decent, however the M2's seem to perform just as well, and are cheaper. But, they're *definately* winter tires... ton's of sidewall lean if you try to push 'em on dry streets. In fact, they remind me of re-92 like grip in the dry, but with more sidewall lean, so they feel a little less stable.

BTW: Debbie, that's a lot of miles on RE-92's!! Mine only lasted about 5000 miles... 'course I did run like 6 autocrosses on 'em. I wore the crap out of the shoulders on 'em... tons of tread left on the inside edge of the tire though! I guess I should'a gotten a better alignment earlier on.

18,000 miles on my RE-92's, but mine did end up being almost completly bald and one even pop'd on me. So 18k is a lot of miles on those crappy tires.

The Mile street tire guy is in my networking group. He was telling me that nowadays, most new cars have tires that last fron 5-10k and thats it. Unlike when you could buy a old buick and and run it for 40k without worring about the tires.

i only had to go over the pass with snow one time so far So i have been lucky but the way i drive in snow is a lot safer then on dry streets. Plus with 35MPH speed limit you really dont need chains with AWD even if you dont have snow tires..i've made that pass with a front wheel drive car with bald tires and only splipped a little due to the idiots who like to come to a complete STOP in the snow....it does become a little harder to move again without a little slipping
