SECCS Rifle Team update

The SECCS rifle team represented again this weekend at Military Rifle Silhouette, shooting pre-1946 rifles at metal Chickens (100m), Pigs (200m), Turkeys (300m), and Rams (500m). Knockdowns required for points.

Brian tried a new load in his M1 Garand, with decent success shooting a 17 out of 40 possible.

I brought only ammo to try out a '96 Swedish Mauser and the match format, to see if it's something I would want to jump into. Turns out that for a 1911-vintage rifle, it shoots pretty good. I shot a 21 out of 40, after shooting the Chickens from the standing position.

The match winner shot a 26, and good fun was had by all. Rams at 500m with open sights and a century old gun is not easy......so I bought the rifle and am ready for more!

How original do the weapons have to be to compete and how often do they hold this pre 1946 shoot?

Pretty original, once a month, and they have an "Open" class for M1A types. What do you have?

I'm not lucky enough to have a M1 but the thought crossed my mind as I read your first post on this thread. How often do they have shoots with AR-15s?

There are High Power matches every month, if you have a standard 20" A2 style AR15 for Service Rifle class. Both reduced range (100) and Over The Course (200, 300, 600).

In the summertime, there are the Varmint Silhouette matches once a month that I've been using my AR's for. That's fun.

I am going to try to do the High Power shoot on October 7th. That will satisfy my requirements for eligibilty to purchase rifles from CMP. See link below.

To get an M1 Garand is not hard to do. Derrick, the requirements are pretty easy to make. Especially since you were in the Military, Kevin too for that matter. Check out the links below.

Actually, the Turkeys are at 421 yards, or 400 meters.

Update: Saturday the SECCS Team took home 3rd place out of 34 shooters at the final Military Rifle Silhouette shoot of the year.

It was funny, it kind of made a coworker mad. He told me a little tale about how he got the treatment for being an hour late. It was the next day after day-light savings time change. He also pointed out, that you can always get time off to go shooting or hunting, just don't be late for personal reasons. LOL.

Idea for the Varmint shoots...

I was looking into the Remington .223 pump rifle for the varmint shoots. What is the time limit in a round (semi auto vs pump) and can I use a scope?

Scopes allowed, yes.

What model is the Pump action? If you are talking about the Model 7615, I think you would be better off with a Standard M700 SPS in 223 or 204 Ruger. BTW, that is what I use when I shoot the VS shoots. A M700 SPS in 204 Ruger.

Here are the basic rules for the Varmint Silhouette shoots as copied from the Gun Club website. Off hand, or standing position is done without a sling. Sitting is done with the aid of a sling.

Basic Equipment

•Eye & ear protection.

•Rifle, any centerfire caliber .22-or-larger ("varmint" caliber or bullet weight recommended), sling (attached at both ends), iron or scope sight.

•Mat for sitting, binoculars.

•40 rounds of ammunition (no sighters allowed). Suggest previously zeroing rifle to strike one inch high at 100 yards. Or, you may adjust sight as you wish.

•Fee: $10 PVGCI members, $12 non-members, $5 Juniors.



Course of Fire

•Each line of Targets: Squirrel at 50 yards, Crow at 110 yards, Rabbit at 175 yards, Woodchuck at 175 yards, and Coyote at 210 yards.

•Shooter stays on one line of targets. A relay consists of one shot at each of your five targets in a three-minute period. Shoot four relays offhand, and four relays sitting.

•Scoring: one point for each target hit, target does not need to be knocked down. High scores for Standing, Sitting, Overall, and Junior.

It is cool that is will take an AR syle magazine, but keep in mind any magazine over 10 rounds is illegal in Killafornia.

Also, even though it is based off of the M870 shotgun, I would be suspect of the accuracy they are claiming. My guess would be something along the line of Minute of Basketball at 210 yards. In other words, more often then not, a complete miss. Also, have you been able to locate one for sale in Killafornia? If so, how much is it?

Since it is being labled as 'Tactical' I would venture that they will want some pretty pennies for it. I still think you would be better off with something tried and true. Just my two cents worth.

On the pump .223, the rounds are single-load only regardless of weapon type, so a semi has no advantage over a bolt rifle. The only reason I shoot my AR's is because I've got some accurate ones, and it's good practice.

I imagine that the Remington would be accurate enough for this game, but overall a poorer choice for a precision rifle. Since you already have an AR, you're not looking to get a Kali-Tactical rig, are you? If mag capacity and rate of fire mean nothing to you, a bolt rifle would be a much better way to go, and be useful for other things. For instance, if you got a Remington LTR 20" .223 with a quick twist, you could use it for long range precision work as well as stuff like the varmint shoots. If you are looking for something that would be ideal for the Varmint matches only, then a 7lb rifle in .223 with a lower power scope would be the ticket.

Brian where were you???

I had to hold the fort for the SECCS Rifle Team alone this time at the first Military Rifle Silhouette match of the season. I had a OK time of it, dropping (missing) 4 targets that should have been hits, 2 Pigs and 2 Chickens. I also rung a Ram with a center hit and it did not go over. I was drawn to shoot the hardest (Turkeys) last, in the wind.

Score: 6 Rams, 5 Turkeys, 8 Pigs, 8 Chickens = 27 out of 40 possible.

That was good enough for a tie for 3rd, and I won the ensuing shoot-off in high wind and high drama.

I had to return the M1 to my friend. So, no more Military Sil for me until I can find a replacement of some sort.

Varmint Sil, I should be able to make that one. As I haven't planned anything out for that weekend, just yet. I want to bring the 17 Remington out to play!!!

Varmint Silhouette was really fun today, the wind was doing 17mph for the first 2 stages (offhand), and calmed a bit for the final two (sitting). This resulted in lower scores, but the competition was still there.

My brother came along, and shot well, as well as a friend of mine in the CHP and his 11yo son. I coached his son along and let him shoot one of my lighter, shorter rifles. It was great experience for everyone.

I shot my 16" scoped recon AR and scored 21 out of 40 total, which was good enough for High Overall by 2 points. I also had High Sitting by a couple, and was in a sudden-death shootoff for High Offhand, which I won on the second shot. So basically, I took all the ribbons home :-)

Brian was supposed to be there, but wasn't, so we have no cumulative SECCS team score. Although, my brother wore a SECCS hoodie the whole time....

EDIT: Oh, and we stopped at Michael Hohl and checked out the STi's in the showroom, I need those fenders on my car.

Went to the Sac a couple weekends ago and placed 3rd in a Tactical Bolt Rifle match, steel targets to 550yds. I was the only one shooting sans bipod.....I was beat by two of the RO's, clearly they know their range well.....;-)

OK, Varmint Silhouette on May 10th! Anybody here planning on it? I might shoot my new .22 Hornet.

Brian posted the basics in post #13 above. Actually, sighters are allowed, but only a few to check zero - if your rifle isn't zeroed, you're probably out of luck.
