Deal, did somebody say Deal? Oh, Dean, yeah that's me.
Default Shorts that aren't. WTF?

OK, this is now officially ridiculous!

Unless you want to spend $20-40+ for a pair of "running" shorts, it is no longer possible to buy shorts that are actually short, ending lower-mid thigh above the knee.

OK, there are a very few khakis and similar pleated front belt looped shorts at almost reasonable lengths, but that is it and they are not suited for athletic endeavors.

Since I have been working out and running, I am burning up old shorts and searching for replacements.

I have some medium weight cotton Fruit of the Loom ones that end just above my kneecap(~7"inseam) that are great and I think were about $6/pair. Went to buy more, and they are now over 5" longer!!!! WTF!

I do not understand this trend in fashion, much less function. I am not suggesting we go back to the junk hanging out short-shorts which some of the running shorts fall into, but what is wrong with a 6" or so inseam, something you can move in easily that breathes and does not cover your knees?

I know I am not cool, and that the NBA and surfers are probably to blame and I can actually understand the need for the added length in some sports, but damn it, I just want to be comfortable.

I am now thinking thrift/second hand stores may be my only option to find something I like.

There you go:

Personally, I can't say I agree with you though. I like shorts that end right above the knee. And they are usually fine for athletic endeavors as long as the crotch is not sagging too much.

Huh? I think that means you do agree. The ones I am trying to replace end right above my kneecap.

I just don't like the ones that are 5 inches longer ending well below the knee. I probably should have left "mid" off my description and just stuck with lower thigh above the knee.

Part of the problem is that I have short legs. 30" inseam. So with an appropriate amount of crotch clearance, 7" or so of inseam = top of kneecap.

You want shorts to go running in? Get running shorts. They cost a lot because there aren't alternatives. Your complaining is just complaining. No one's going to be able to give you an alternative because there aren't any. The shorts you're looking for haven't been made in the last decade at least. If you want a pair, buy some new shorts and cut off 5 inches.

Personally, I'm ecstatic that shorts are longer. I like mine to end right at the knee or just below. Now that shorts are actually a bit longer, I can finally buy some that fit me comfortably. You should have tried being 6'+ tall in the 80's. Those short shorts were shorter than my underwear... thank god spandex bike shorts were acceptable to wear under gym shorts back then.

My search so far has included Walmart, Big 5, Scheels and a couple others.

It is no different than the threads you start to complain about something and somebody might have an answer besides scissors.

The 5" shorter FotL ones I have are less than 5 years old and I am not a big fan of the all synthetic running shorts. I am not just being cheap, I also lounge around or run errands in these because they are cotton and very comfortable. They are somewhere between a very thin sweat and thick t-shirt jersey type material.

And as I said, I have short legs, so your over the knee shorts go half way down my calf.

I have not been to every store, so maybe there is a place where old people can still find uncool clothing. I may end up buying on-line, but clothing is one of the things I really like to have in my hands and try on before buying.

I have an old pair of cotton shorts that I keep around for working out in since they're so comfy. I think you'll find some eventually. Just keep looking.

Dean, go to Ross or Marshalls. I think they both have the shorts that you are describing.

Go to sports authority or whatever it is in meadowood mall, and check the cheap rack. I couldn't find any that would go down to my knee, but I settled cuz I'm broke. I think they were around $10

You mean like Dean in Lt. Dangle shorts or Dean in ".....your over the knee shorts go half way down my calf..." capris?

I think it is funny that a shorts consultant is clearly what is needed here.

I found some old guy shorts at the local Scolaris on S. McCarran. The price was $7.99. Perfect for the Senor Cheap Bastard!!

There are some very unacceptably short Porsche Design shorts on Gilt right now, made me think of this thread. I can kick you an invite if you don't use Gilt.
