Could this have been more than a block for tenth? Barrichello, and Schumacher have a history don't they? Perhaps someone who has been watching F1 longer than I could clarify.

Also did anyone see the Top Gear tribute to Ayrton Senna last week? It was quite touching.

Oh no doubt their history at Ferrari had something to do with it. Barrichello has a much faster car plus fresh tires and something to prove. He was going to pass Michael or wreck trying... it was just a dick move for Schumacher to make it so much closer to the latter than necessary.

Holy crap, I agree with Flavio?

http://www.gpupdate.net/en/f1-news/2...ionship-title/

Quote:
According to former Renault F1 team boss Flavio Briatore Mark Webber will win the 2010 Formula 1 championship this season. Briatore, who happens to be Webber's manager, has said that Webber is one of the most intelligent drivers at the grid currently.

“Mark my words,” Briatore warns in Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport. “Webber is on his way to win the championship this season. I'm not just saying this because he is one of my drivers, but because everyone who watches his races lately can see it. Mark is a driver who can deliver exceptional performances on track and shows he is extremely mature on track too.

“In Hungary he was the first driver to realise he could take a bit of a risk to race 75% of the race on the softer Bridgestone compound. That decision brought him his victory in Hungary. It just proves what an intelligent driver he is.”

Thanks to his victory at the Hungaroring Mark Webber now leads the Formula 1 championship with 161 points. Meanwhile, Red Bull leads the constructors' championship with 312 points, closely followed by McLaren.
This season should have been Vettel's championship season, except his bad luck early on with reliability opened the door for Webber, and Webber having been given the opportunity has simply out thought and out driven Vettel and the rest of the field on track. Vettel will eventually win a bunch of championships, but this season is Webber's IMO.

Quick Nick... now with less Quick.

http://www.gpupdate.net/en/f1-news/2...-join-pirelli/

Quote:
Heidfeld released by Mercedes to join Pirelli
17 August 2010

Nick Heidfeld will join the Pirelli development team in order to prepare the Formula 1 tyres for next season. Mercedes Grand Prix confirmed on Tuesday morning the team's test and reserve driver was released from his contract to take up the position of official test driver for Pirelli.

Italian tyre manufacturer Pirelli is currently preparing for its return to Formula 1 and in order to start testing next year's tyres the company needed to sign up an experienced driver to develop its tyres.

Speaking about the team's decision to part company with Nick Heidfeld team boss Ross Brawn said: “We can confirm that the team is pleased to allow Nick Heidfeld the opportunity to join Pirelli and contribute to their development work for the company's imminent return to Formula One.

“Nick is an extremely experienced driver and we are confident that his racing knowledge and technical feedback will prove extremely useful to Pirelli and therefore of benefit to the sport as a whole. Nick has been a real asset to Mercedes Grand Prix since joining our team this year and we are pleased to see his career progressing.”

Heidfeld was pleased with Mercedes' decision to release him from his contract. “First of all I would like to thank Ross Brawn, Norbert Haug and Nick Fry for allowing me the opportunity to become Pirelli's official test driver,” Heidfeld said. “The team has always said that they would not stand in my way if such a chance arose and they have kindly allowed me to take up this exciting new role. I would like to thank everyone at Mercedes Grand Prix for the great cooperation that we have had this year.

“I have greatly enjoyed supporting the team in my position as Reserve Driver and have felt welcome right from the outset. It was impressive to have the opportunity to work with the current World Champions and I wish the team all the best for the remainder of the season and beyond.”
They make it out to sound like Heidfeld wanted to leave, but I have a hard time believing anyone would want to leave an F1 team for a tire manufacturer. Then again, with the lack of testing, and Schumacher and Rosberg on the team... it's not like Heidfeld was getting any seat time. He'll probably get to drive a lot more at Pirelli, even if there's no real chance of getting to race.

Hmm, an uphill start will be interesting.

Looks fairly decent. Especially for a Tilke track.

No joke. I never would have guessed that was a Tilke design. Apparently he's fully aware of his reputation for sterile track designs... that Austin track looks way more old-school. Really seems like it's built into the surrounding landscape instead of the landscape being built around the track.

Yeah, I can't remember if I its in one of those articles, but I read another one that said the Pirelli contract ends on Thursday and the new contract with Sauber starts on Friday. The funny thing is, it always ended in mid-September, rather than through the end of the calendar year (or after the last race or something else appropriate) and it went unnoticed or unreported.

Looks like some shenanigans.

I really want to know how the radio conversation that led up to this went:

"Heikki, telemetry indicates you have an engine problem."

"Yeah. It's on fire!"

"Stop and get out."

"Actually, I'm right by pit lane, I'll just come in."

"Dude, don't come in! None of us here want to be on fire too!"

*sigh* "Fine, if I pull up to the pit wall, can you get one of the tossers over at Williams to hand me an extinguisher?"

"Um... okay."

I have never seen a driver in the modern era put out his own fire. Kovalainen is a badass!

Hekki is awesome.

Looks like Group Lotus (the car manufacturer) is going all out against Team Lotus (the F1 team) saying its rights to the term "Lotus" are invalid.
