Default Gas Prices

Check the picture in this link: http://www.gasbuddy.com/gb_gastemperaturemap.aspx

I have been watching this for months, the entire US used to be red, then the green area slowly crept in from the east, but never quite reached us. Why is CA/NV different from the rest of the country? I thought all gas was supplied by pipeline these days, so why does it cost more for gas here and CA?

First, we are buying California gas. Effectively we are in california as far as prices are concerned.

Second, the land values (of gas stations) and the high taxes CA puts on gas are affecting it.

Third, we get anally raped on gas because as a nation we are crackfiends who do what massah says, because we won't take steps to change that.

But more importantly... CA uses so much fuel that it supplies itself. Oil comes in via tanker and pipeline from Alaska/Pacific. It's refined in CA for CA. Therefore, CA is really kind of it's own gas market... the rest of the nation is supplied by LA and TX refineries which is why they were hit by Katrina more than CA was.

But... when things like that refinery fire in Richmond reduce CA's refinery capacity (which is the real limiting factor of supply, not the crude, or price of foreign oil) then CA's prices go up. And like Kevin said, Reno is essentially CA when it comes to gas.

OK that makes sense. Even though it sucks.

Dang. Remind me the next time I'm on I-80 to swing through Rock Springs and tank up.

On my trip out to elko last week I stopped at a Chevron station that had 85 octane. Wouldn't something like that skew the results (assuming 85 is cheaper than 87) when almost all gas price comparisons use 'regular unleaded' in their data?
