Question Random turbo stuff..

I have a rather stock sub 06 wrx. Its got turbo back, intake, and gonna have a frontmount and tune here shortly. Didnt have too much time to search, but was wondering if anyone had an opinion on upgrading the turbo.

Welcome to seccs. Why are you deciding to go with a front mount? What do you have in the form of engine management?

Thanks, glad to be here. Just curious, wondering if by the way you say "why a frontmount" maybe has a disadvantage to it?? My plan was getting a frontmount and tune since they kinda go hand and hand. the tune im getting is by ECUtek delta dash system that plugs in underneath the steering wheel. As for the front mount, im thinking a perrin kit. Then eventually upgrade turbo and injectors etc.. but this is just kind of a rough draft, and thats why im asking for opinions and open to hear some some good information and learn alot ya know, part of the reason on why i joined this..

This thread will probably be moved to the technical section. The reason I said "why front mount?" is because, from what I have seen, they create lag. And since you are still with the stock turbo, I think there are probably other mods that would be a better bang for the buck. I am sure you will find good info on upgrades if you search this forum as I know we all talk about this very thing quite often.

The answer to the front mount question depends on how much more ass it kicks than sucks. As for tune, DeltaDash is not "tuning" software. It's strictly for datalogging. If you really mean an EcuTEK flash, chances are you're better off with an AccessPort. For the turbo recommendations, that's going to depend entirely on what you plan to do with the car. Autocross, track trials, dyno queen, etc.

I have had good experience with EcuTek. I think most of the stuff they have out for our cars is good it is just a matter of what company you want to go with. also I do not think a front mount will have much lag, but if you are not sure how much you are going to to do with your motor i would get a sti top mount.

EcuTek is a good setup. It's just harder to find someone to tune it 'cause the licensing for tuners is redonkulously expensive when compared to Cobb's Access Port.

At this point, I would say the only two real players are Cobb AccessPort and Open source Enginuity or similar.

I think open source has all but caught up with ECUTek without all the proprietary BS and inability to remove/resell the licenses and Cobb is still out front with technology and consumer friendly products.

As Scott said, finding a reputable tuner actually recommending or even willing to tune on ECUTek is pretty rough. Most are leaning Cobb or Open source.

Yep. The fault is not with the product of EcuTEK but with the lack of tuners who want to use it.

Part of the fault is with the product itself. Cost, technical issues with proprietary "locking" of the ECU and inability to remove and resell a license are significant reasons the product has faltered and why demand from consumers and tuners has dropped.

I had an ECUTek ECU and liked it but would never choose them again until they resolve their issues and catch up and surpass Cobb's feature set. Cobb may be slow with new features, but ECUTek is glacial by comparison.

I'm just referring to the actual tuning tools. The proprietary junk is why tuners aren't using it anymore.

I finally switched over to Cobb's AP v 2.0, I was a Ecutek holdout from the early days. I gave up on the limitations the Ecutek setup offered. With tuning for altitude, I think Map switching is essential, Cobb offers that in an easy to use setup.

Well thanks for all the info, it seems like the ECUtek system is kindof behind in technology. as for me, im not to familiar with the cobb Accessport but seems like a good product. Now i geuss its up to me to make the decision.. thanks again.

Get an Accessport, its cake to use and there are a ton of people who tune with them. Even a guy who comes to reno.

Open source is a very viable option. You don't get all the bells and whistles of the AP gatget, but if all you need is 1 tune, it works just fine and you can spend the $s on a custom tune.

I think Cody and maybe a couple others on the board are using open source.

Cody uses accessport. Actually, I can't think of anyone that uses the opensource tuning options.

Logging, yeah. Tuning, no.

Ed uses street tuner because it sounds a lot like street racing.
