I am weird and actually like shoveling snow. I just like snow in general, I need more exercise, and I'm good at it. For fun sometimes I shovel the neighbor's walk early even though he has a kick-ass snowblower. It just messes with him. When he asks I tell him it's just repaying because he did some of mine last year, and he says, "That was years ago... and it was just the part in front of the mailboxes".

The mailman didn't even come to visit us today. And I even shoveled sidewalk space to the mailbox, . Our court had a foot of snow, so I don't blame him.
My arms are dying tonight, I shoveled out 2 lanes of the driveway, filled with a foot of snow, and with the lanes being about 30 ft. long... how much volume of snow was that?

20' x 12' x 1' = 240 cubic feet of snow...

At 10% water content that is 24 cubic feet of water...

That is approximately 180 gallons of water. The rest was air.

All I have to say is, I love my FJ. While the days of bombing around in the STI on snows was fun...the FJ is unstoppable. Roads are going to stay frozen for a few days, there are already some insane ice-speed bumps forming... I was behind a white 05 WRX wagon on Sparks Blvd tonight and I think he came off the ground...Ouch

I thought I was hurting more than 24 cubic feet of water ... so I went outside to measure. It's actually 30'x18' x 1' = 540 c ft. Sure felt heavier than 10% water content, but I am a weakling.

But anyway - YAY for Subarus. Rachel made it up here today on her new Yoko Avid Touring S all-season tires (Dean's 'black friday' recommendation, mounted and out the door at $250).

AWD? Check.
Snow tires? Check.
Disposable car? Check.

Other than having the car way too low on those terrible H&Rs, I couldn't have a better winter beater.

I just got back from a field/meeting trip that started last TH. Reno->Vegas->Ely->Vegas->Reno. Camped in the field the first two nights, a bit cold but OK. Stayed in a Motel in Ely, it was freakin below zero and snowing. Vegas was OK, got out of the meeting at 1030 and drove back, plenty of white-out starting at Coaldale.

The rental Dodge NITRO!!!11!!1! actually did OK, but I think the exhaust note is totally contrived.

disclaimer, she drove mostly on roads that had been plowed. For the unplowed stuff, I am also a huge fan of Blizzaks.
Last year and this year I am driving on Goodyear Ultra Ice, not as good as the Blizzaks, but they were a gift so I can't complain.

Sometimes plowed roads are the worst, with the layer of ice they tend to leave behind.

I didn't get any ice tonight on my Dunlop 3Ds, but in the snow and slush they're pretty awesome.

I frickin' love the snow. I feel the way about it that my girlfriend, Amanda, feels about the ocean. It just makes me happy.

However, I high centered on the stuff trying to get into the parking lot where Amanda works. Her boss was nice enough to go home and grab a tow rope to get me out though. Super nice of him.

Got home (incredibly light traffic around 6:30) and shoveled most of the driveway...kind of half assed it. Khail, PM for my address.

Go pick one up at HF. I carry one in all my winter cars. The most fun is pulling SUVs out with the Audi.

I was out driving around most of the day/evening and it is starting to ice up bad now...

I almost had a Jeep for dessert taking a friend home after dinner. It was a two idiot and at least 3 snow donkey incident. Rocket scientist in a truck pulling a bob cat on a trailer was parked/stuck diagonal blocking 2.5 of a 4 lane curve on a hill, on
.

I stop because I see a jeep coming down the hill with the clear 1.5 lanes on his side. Well, this douche isn't paying attention and rather than just driving past he locks up all 4 and starts sliding. first towards the parked truck, then the curb and then towards me and then fortunately towards the curb again which he hits at a 45 degree angle, now blocking the remaining 1.5 lanes. Takes him 4-5 tries to back up and get off the curb and then guns it towards me again. by now he is past the parked truck far enough that I hit the gas headed for the truck and turn right around the dufus and proceed easily up the hill.

All this idiot had to do was keep driving the damn jeep and stay off the brakes.

And I continue to be amazed by people in 2+ ton vehicles doing 50MPH on snow and ice. I'm in a lighter, lower CG, snow tired, torsion AWD car with all sorts of performance driving experience and I'm only comfortable doing 25(+5 to -15)

I can't decide who is dumber, them or the ones that can't figure out why 2 wheel drive cars on bald summer tires can't go straight much less up hills without chains and abandon cars anywhere they want rather than backing them into a curb, ditch or anywhere but the middle of the road. While there were probably a hundred honorable mentions, the winner was the one parked in the freeway on ramp lane of Northbound keystone just north of 5th st. by 10 ft. back up those 10 feet and then turn left/around/whatever.

I did practice Scandinavian flicks a few times today. Getting better at them, but still need a lot of work.

Well I had a fun day lol. I only had 3 deliveries for work but clearance definitely became and issue. I never had any trouble with traction or sliding, (unless I initiated it lol) but my car is way to low for this amount of snow.

The snow this morning was actually quite pleasant to drive on. When it's -4 deg out, the snow and ice is so cold it acts more like dirt and pavement because it doesn't melt into water under the weight of the car.

In other news... how the hell was it -4F this morning at 8am!!?! My thermometer recorded a low of -6F last night. That's a little bit off the predicted low of 19F or whatever it was supposed to be.

When I checked the overnight predictions last night, I remember reading that they were predicting a low of 6F with a "feels like" of -4F.

Maybe your prediction was the daylight version.

Also, totals from rgj.com

Kirkwood Ski Resort -- 30 to 40 inches of snow
Alpine Meadows -- 33 to 42 inches
Sugar Bowl -- 36 inches
Mammoth Mountain -- 13 inches
Tahoe City -- 18 inches
Truckee-Tahoe Airport -- 25 inches
Glenbrook -- 17 inches
Carson City -- 15 inches
Southwest Reno (near Lakeside Drive and McCarran Boulevard) -- 9 inches
Reno-Tahoe International Airport -- 7 inches
North Reno -- 10 inches

My parents got more than that in Placerville which is half the elevation of here, but must have caught the crazier part of the storm before half of it dissipated over the Sierras.

I skied at alpine today - it was really deep and really cold.

It was -17F this morning up here.
